LAST SEPTEMBER SUNDAY GREETINGS, GARDENER!

The mosquitoes are still out in force today in North Carolina as we sit outside on our deck typing out this email. They’re honing in on some of their last supper for the season, but we’re still grateful to be able to sit outside under nature’s canopy.

So we grab some lemon balm, crush it and rub it on exposed skin. Here are some other mosquito repelling plants to plant or plan for.

FOOD PRESERVATION

The homegrown and food preservation theme we touched on in last week’s email continues, and shall for another month or so for many of us.

We posted this on the GardensAll Facebook the other day:
The food preservation industry is thriving during these times. Many have noticed the challenge in getting canning jars. Dehydrators are selling well and freeze dryers are getting harder to come by.

To which community member, Kathie Chambers Underwood replied:
Very, very true. We decided that we could have used another pressure canner. We prefer the All American. Delivery for these have been pushed back to February.

You can read more on that update in the beginning of this article on freeze drying foods.

And THANKS to Kathie Chambers Underwood for sharing her freeze dryer experience with us!

If you already have a freeze dryer — or other food preservation experiences to share — we’d love to hear from you too. You can just reply to this email.

OUR GARDENING STORY - PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE (in brief)

For those who are newer to our community, you may not know the thumbnail profile of our family. Sharing a snippet here now, should you be interested.

Gardening and farming has been in our future plans, which is why we started the Planting for Retirement Facebook group and also the PlantingForRetirement.com website.

You’re probably familiar with this famous Emerson quote:

Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen.
~Ralph Waldo Emerson, poet, author, philosopher, 1803-1882

SO WE DID
Near the end of 2015 we set in motion the Planting for Retirement notion by purchasing that domain name. Soon after we were approached by the original owner of GardensAll.com about buying that website and with that, inheriting the GardensAll Facebook page.

We weren’t ready… we hadn’t even gotten back into gardening yet because of living in the woods without enough sunny areas. But we’re growing our family businesses, which includes media publishing through websites based on our interests.

We’re also writers with published fiction and journals (the kind you write in) as well as other websites full of articles. So to take on a gardening website seemed a fortuitous opportunity.

IT SEEMS THE UNIVERSE RESPONDED TO THE FUTURE VISION
When we made our commitment to that future vision clear through our actions, the universe sure seemed to respond in kind. So we bought GardensAll and have since then, been running to keep up and catch up with our aspirations. We love it all… but it’s like gardening at peak harvest time… there’s often more to do than time.

But we’re grateful for these opportunities for it has forced us to kick our gardening adventure into gear sooner than later, and even before we can make it our farming venture. That’s actually the best way... to get back into growing and gardening and from there research, experiment and plan for future market garden crops. Go small before going big.

THERE'S RARELY A PERFECT TIME, SO JUST START
It’s very much as though our future aspirations are pulling us forward into them, helter skelter, even before we were ready and able to do so with an orderly plan. But the reality is that when it comes to starting something new, there's rarely a "best time". But when we take it on, we find a way.

But we’re all for pivoting and adapting when circumstances warrant it, AND for picking up the pace and intensity by doing more than we thought we could. We’re also ever learning, growing and improving, while having fun doing it.

Thus… we’re not always on time with our newsletter… some have more info in them than others, but it’s a journey we're committed to.

We’d love to hear what you’d like to see more of and less of in future newsletter emails so that we can do our best to serve your interests above all.

You can just reply to this and we’ll get back to you.

Meanwhile… a few more articles from this week.
