SUPER SUNDAY, GARDENER!

Sow What? #August!

When smack dab in the heart of summer’s heat, it’s hard to think about fall planting. But, this year, I was determined to get some seedlings started for planting in late September.

We seeded kale, broccoli, and radicchio and they're already popping up. There’s another flat of endive, cos (Romaine), and Italiko radicchio that’s a few weeks ahead.

The flats are moved from the greenhouse each morning and covered with a shade cloth cloche, so they get just the right amount of light and not too much heat. We bottom water at this stage to prevent damping off. They return to the greenhouse every night for protection against heavy rain and marauding night critters.

When You’re Horizontally Challenged...

After taking this updated wide angle photo of the garden, I realized just how much vertical gardening we’re doing. The cattle panel arches, the vertical fencing, and the many bamboo structures have all been “engineered” for growing up via vertical gardening.
Got Space? Then Spread Out!

Now, if you have plenty of sunny gardening space, then you won’t have to hassle with as many plant support systems. However there are advantages to vertical growing even when you have plenty of garden space to grow wide.

One vertical thing most everyone does is staking tomatoes. How are you staking yours? Here are some ideas, especially if your system isn’t working out so well.

Garden Pizazz with Beauty and Benefits!

Right in the middle of the garden, we placed in a planter this knock-down gorgeous Fiesta Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis ‘Fiesta’)

Now, practically everyday, we walk by and admire a fresh bloom. So grateful and amazed at such beauty by way of human horticulturalists collaborating with nature. We’re imagining the flower fairies and gnomes having fun painting these to life.

Please let us know how you're doing and if you need advice — or have advice — on anything. We love hearing from you!

Wishing you great gardens, happy harvests and stay healthy and optimistic. We will get through these most challenging times.
