Subject: GARDEN disPATCH: Farm to Table

SUNDAY GREETINGS, GROWER!

With so much news out there regarding health concerns, my solution oriented mind turned to ways folks might minimize the risks and, maximize their health.

If our food travels so far (one source averaged the distance at 1500 miles) to our table, would that not imply a whole bunch of handlers from origin to destination?
But if our food is locally sourced, that would certainly cut down on the “middle-men”.

Obviously, if you bring your food from the garden into the kitchen, that’s minimal “shipping and handling”.

And this got me thinking about the health benefits of going locavore.

The Food to Table—AKA, locavore—phenomena.

The concept originated back in the early 70’s and has now become a full blown movement.

Small local farms and farmers’ markets have grown in tandem with the increasing demand for fresh, natural or organic produce. Small-scale farming, be it on 10 acres or an urban plot, can potentially offer increasing profits to growers bringing their bounty to market.

If you’re keen to get into market gardening we’ve also included several articles and resources on this topic, plus a couple films.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on these topics- Farm to Table, Locavores, small scale farms, or whatever else you might fancy. Comments may be posted on the Gardens All Facebook page or via email reply.

Take care and, as the season allows, enjoy your little Eden.
