Subject: GARDEN disPATCH: Camellias; Planting & Harvesting

Sunday Greetings, Gardener!

The GardensAll audience live in all growing zones. That means that while some of you are in hot states planting fall gardens, others in more northern states and regions have put their garden down for a long winter's rest by now.

Whatever it is for you, we hope this finds you enjoying beautiful fall weather and garden harvests. Feel free to drop us a line about where you are and what phase of gardening you're in now.

FIRST FROST IN ZONE 7A - HARVEST TIME!
Jack Frost arrived this morning and spread his confection over the garden. The evening before, we picked all the tenderlings including the Red Kuri winter squash, peppers, and green tomatoes.

Good news on the Kuri is that our diligent application of kaolin clay stopped the destruction by pickle worms. YAY! We’re grateful to now have a half dozen or so adorning our kitchen greenhouse window.

DIY CATTLEPANEL GREENHOUSE TEMPS
Yesterday and this morning our outdoor thermometer read 31℉ at 8:30 AM.
The new DIY greenhouse kept temps about 45℉ yesterday.

This morning we achieved our aim of 50℉ and it's awesome to see the improvement from just a few tweaks.

You can see that update at the end of this article.

New Fall and Winter Garden Plants
Over 4 inches of rain have fallen this week. Then came the cold. New plantings went in prior to the deluge:
Broccoli (Premium)
Cauliflower (Amazing)
Radicchio
Collards (Yates & Georgia)
Chard (Bright Lights)

What We’re Harvesting
Red Kuri Squash
Fuyu Persimmons
American Persimmons
Peppers (Marconi, Bequinos, Fish, Bell-Purple & Green, & Sugar Rush)
Leafy Greens (sweet potato amaranth, escarole, kale, chard, etc.)
Cucamelons

Landscape Garden Visit and Growing Fall-Blooming Camellias
Many gardeners have discovered how easy it is to grow camellias.

We enjoyed a visit to Will and Kate Ferrell’s amazing landscape garden near High Point, NC. Focus centered on their majestic array of fall-blooming camellias (Sasanqua type) that adorn their homesite. We saw many other charming plants there as well.

You can read more about that and see a video of it here.

Wishing you great gardens and happy harvests!
