Mid December Greetings!
The first 2020 Baker Creek seed catalogue just arrived. A beautiful purple phlox adorns the cover. The catalogue opens with a barrage of family photos, news updates, and invites to the company’s Facebook page, Instagram, and Youtube. They also have added two more brick and mortar stores.
They do a great job marketing the Spring Planting Festival in May and the National Heirloom Expo in September. Looks like a lot of fun and learning. Would love to hear if any of you have attended these events.
Baker Creek now has a new Youtube Channel. A brief visit reveals bunches of info on their playlists. Looks like a lot of learning to do over the winter.
By page 8, the fun begins. Amazing heirloom varieties are temptingly presented. Out come the highlighters and the post-it tabs! A hint of spring fever sets in. Hmmmm. After all, we do have a little green house,. . . right? https://www.gardensall.com/cattle-panel-greenhouse/
KALE! A thick frost settled on the garden overnight. The tiny ice crystal coating sparkled like sequins. I took glamour shots of our ornamental (aka flowering) kale. It’s a joy to be greeted by such beauty. Our article on kale dispels the confusion between ornamental cabbage and ornamental kale. |
| | WINTER GARDEN Our cold weather garden is yielding dandelion, collards, kale, mizuna, arugula, and perpetual spinach (Swiss chard). We just made another huge pot of Gypsy Soup leaving only two more Red Kuri squash for the next batch. This is one of our favorite soup recipes. https://www.gardensall.com/growing-red-kuri-winter-squash/ https://recipesandme.com/gypsy-soup-with-winter-squash-and-sweet-potatoes/
LONGEVITY The cattle panel greenhouse is keeping the longevity spinach warm and allowing us to partake our daily leaf. If you’re curious as to why we’re cultivating this tropical vine all winter, it’s for the amazing health benefits… and a part of our daily vitamins. https://www.gardensall.com/longevity-spinach/
SEEDS! By the way, I just placed an order. For seeds. From Baker Creek. They got me. Early.
Kale, miasma, mache (aka corn salad). All suitable for the little greenhouse plot. Planting begins as soon as they arrive.
A gardener is always sowing and growing!
