For all who are celebrating Father’s Day in any capacity today…

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!

GRATITUDE AND BLESSINGS - Tribute to Coleman

We’re ever so grateful to Coleman… the father of our household and master gardener of GardensAll gardens. He pours care, nurturing and sustenance into every aspect of our gardening and our family, all while working hard in business and in contributing to the lives of others.

MEANWHILE...

We’re having a perfect rainy day here with showers coming and going. In the spaces in between it’s the lovely sound of raindrops in the trees dripping from leaf-to-leaf.

But… we’re also cognizant that many in our community are in droughts and arid climates and struggling with all that that entails when trying to garden. So we’re sharing tips on that and more in this brief newsletter.

OLLA POTS

This past week included conversations about gardening in arid climates, so we’re sharing our article on olla pots. If you have experience using these, in or above ground, we’d love to hear about your experience. Just send us a reply and feel free to share any photo/s of it if you’d care to.

ESPALIER FRUIT TREES

There’s so much to love about these, from lovely landscape features to property dividers and edible hedges. Espalier fruit trees also have many benefits

Below are some comments in the Planting for Retirement Facebook group:

COMMENTS AND TIPS ON GROWING IN ARID MOUNTAIN REGIONS

“I live on the Western Slope of Colorado, high altitude desert. Sub freezing during the winter, blazing hot during the summer. Water is the biggest issue.”

~Ruth Hartsell

“This fall I will be erecting a green hoop house to deal with the winter. Our lows can fall to the low 20s. In the summer I will trade the plastic for shade cloth to deal with 120 temperatures.”
~Aubrey Sanders

“High desert of California here, the best thing I did was join a local gardening group, they just have so much amazing experience.”
~Jennifer Lombardi

DRY IN ALABAMA - Great idea to use frozen water jugs!

“We're usually dry here mid-summer in Alabama. I recycle plastic jugs, fill with water, freeze, and place them in potted plants for a cool, slow drip. Other than that I choose all drought tolerant plants. Only the strong 'round here.’”
~Shannon DeAnna Schofield
