GARDEN GREETINGS, FRIEND!

FALL GARDEN COLOR

What plants are you growing for fall garden color? Some of our favorites are knockout roses and toad lilies, both of which are blooming and fragrant now.

FALL GARDEN MAINTENANCE

More fall garden maintenance and preparations have been in order, with two recent raised bed renovations over the past few weekends.

RAISED BED RENOVATION TO THWART TREE ROOT INVASION

The past few weekends, a 3’ X 8’ raised bed was cleaned out and renovated with additional organic matter, compost, and organic garden fertilizer. The soil was removed in sections, and any exposed tree roots clipped. To block future roots, a new layer of weed fabric and cardboard laid in the bottom. The soil was returned, top-dressed with organic material and slow release Espoma Garden Tone fertilizer (3-4-4), and then mixed with a spade fork.

RAISED GARDEN BEDS BENEFITS

PLANTED

In the first row, Egyptian Walking Onions were planted. These will carry over into the spring growing season with their unique growing habit referred to as “walking” and are a part of our expanding crops of perennial vegetables.

The second row, whis is already sprouting, contains Dazzling Blue Kale- a lacinato type known for it’s winter hardiness and colorful display of blue and purple leaves.

EDIBLE LEAVES

As you process your garden goodies, before pulling all the plants and putting your beds to rest, consider harvesting some of the many garden greens that are also edible, but less often used, like okra greens  and strawberry leaves.

We’re just getting started in researching and writing up an article on this, but sharing this article-in-progress in case you have a chance to go ahead and harvest some of your leaves before your first frost.

A few weeks ago we shared about Okra Greens, and we’ll share more on the various edible leaves next week. Right now we’ve got the food dehydrator working round the clock. Current contents are longevity spinach, stevia and strawberry leaves (hanging on a line because the dehydrator is full).

What leaves do you consume as food, tea, medicine or powders that aren’t a part of the usual usage for that plant?

We'd love to hear about it (photos and/or details) and we can add it to the article with tribute to you (unless you request not to).

FALL PHOTOS

Please share your fall photo/s and we'll add them to this young but perennial article-in-progress. Include your state and plant name (if it's a specific plant), and any other info you'd like to share about the image and we'll add it with tribute to you.
