Subject: Chives vs. Scallions + Gratitude from TX

Sunday Greetings, Gardener!

The other day we posted a positive and popular meme by John Steinbeck, (it's at the end of this article).

And... one poster told us to "go to hell". Someone said we should kick them off the page, but instead, we replied that we were sorry it bothered him. Because here's the thing, rudeness comes from pain. If someone is being rude or mean, it's because they're hurting somewhere, somehow. For that we can have empathy.

💜

We hope this finds you and yours well and on the better side of recent wintry weather. We have community members who’ve been especially hard hit in the southern states not used to so much cold and snow. Many have lost their spring garden plants and will have to start over, and for many more, that’s been the least of their worries.

🥶😔💙

During such times what always helps us is to focus on the blessings, for there’s always something for which to be grateful. And… inevitably, the pioneering and make-do attitude of many gardeners and farmers is summed up in that old saying:

“What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.”

👩🏼‍🌾👏🏼🌟💪🏼👨🏽‍🌾

ALWAYS SOME GOOD

There’s always some good in the bad, like the way neighbors and strangers step up and out to help others. From places to stay, to donations and food. And yes… there are the negatives. There always are, but what we focus on grows, so we’re focusing on the good, for when we do, we see more of that, and that’s what grows in our lives.

Tried and true, through and through.

It’s like in the garden. When we focus on what we’re growing, our plants tend to thrive, and when they don’t, we assess, learn and try again.

We’re sharing below, an example of this attitude of gratitude from a GardensAll and Planting for Retirement community member further below, should you wish to read more on this topic.

But first...

QUESTION:

Do you know the difference between chives, scallions, green onions and spring onions?

🍃

There’s often confusion on these, (though gardeners are more likely to have the answer than the average consumer), so we did a deep dive on that in today’s feature article.

⭐️

We’d love to hear from you as well, should you want to weigh in on this topic. Especially if you’re growing them, and/or if you have any different perspective on this — sometimes — hotly debated subject!

🙉

While it should be a simple topic, it was hard to get to the bottom of it because there’s so much conflicting information out there, but I think we’ve done it. Meanwhile, if you have any other perspectives, we’re glad to hear them; you can just reply to this, and we’ll be sure to read it and respond.

Now, back to gratitude from a community member, during winter storms Uri & Viola.

A Gratitude Perspective from Debra Yvonne Mathis

I'm fine. Quite lucky actually. My power has popped off a few times but has come back on quickly. The Internet is fine. The power pops off when I turn on too many things .... the problem is, it’s old house with no insulation. So the floor of course is ICY and also the INSIDE of the windows too. But guess who bought some rugs this last fall? 😇

My main concern is busted pipes. So I have allowed some small streams of water to flow from my two indoor faucets. Cousins across the road, also in a very old house, had pipes bust around midnight.

Really, my main challenge is the fact that I have 3 cats myself, and I am taking care of 2 more whose owners across the street would allow them to die otherwise. But they don't get along with mine, and they are mostly used to being able to go outside a number of times every day. We've been trapped in this house together since Friday [about 5 days]. We are talking about having one litter box between 5 full grown cats, cats who would prefer to go outside to do their business. Enough said.

Fact is, I am so lucky, in part because my pantry is full of food that I made or stashed, like I have lots of salt, and organic sugar and flour and some canned goods and tons of honey and the list goes on. My new gas heater in the living room is pretty much keeping the core of the house warm. I am perfectly fine with having my long johns beneath sweats and sweaters and wearing a knit cap and maybe even a scarf through the house. I have been in a lot worse living situations than this.... Grateful!

~ END of contribution by Debra ~

We love this positive perspective from Debra. It’s so important to focus on blessings over bothers!

From the heart,

P.S. Here's that post that rubbed some folks the wrong way the other day. We hope you understand and enjoy it.

ACCOMPANYING POST TEXT:
A good one to remember when we get tired of the cold and snow! Though our hearts go out to those suffering and struggling... wishing you warm days of spring come soon!

By the way... lovely barberry photo. Anyone growing it and enjoying the berries?
