Tired of hearing about the next “new” plant based meat product on the market? Let’s talk about the other long term companion on the plate – golden, crisp and smoking hot. Yes, French fries. From the humble potato.

Having begun its journey in the highlands of Peru more than 6,000 years ago, this wandering tuber has now become the third most important crop in the world in terms of food consumption, after rice and wheat.

As it produces more food on less land faster than any other major food crop, there is growing importance of potato in the current global food system and recognition of the role it plays as a food security crop.

In Asia, starchy foods represent the main source of dietary energy. However, the role of tropical root and tuber crops is changing from being just food staples to sources of raw materials for processed food products, animal feed and even bioplastics.

There has been an increased farming and consumption of the potato – and that comes with an infamous companion: food waste.

In the WASTE-TO-VALUE: A WHITE PAPER ON THE FUTURE OF FOOD UPCYCLING IN ASIA launched earlier this year we noted major investment opportunities at this agri-industrial level, as it is here that food waste can be collected, stored, and processed with greater ease and scale.

Introducing Great Wrap. Founded in Australia 2020, by husband and wife duo Jordy and Julia Kay, Great Wrap is a revolutionary stretch wrap material made from potato waste and a mix of other home compostable biopolymers. It takes less than 180 days to break down into carbon and water in a compost pile.

Their pallet wrap, catering wrap and cling wrap will reduce millions of tonnes of plastic from our oceans and landfills every year, returning carbon to soils via composting.

Great Wrap is already available in Australia and has launched in USA earlier this month. This manufacturing facility is in addition to its two existing Australian facilities.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE FUTURE OF PROTEIN INNOVATION

Earlier at FFA 2022, we highlighted that although there is no one-size-fits-all model towards sustainable agri-food system transformation, developments and innovations in Alternative Proteins are among the most promising.

With increasing global focus on reaching net-zero emissions, the shift to climate-friendly, sustainable protein production brings with it fairly significant investment opportunities.

How can we sustain the momentum behind Asia’s plant-based food and beverage revolution? What is the role of the traditional protein sector in driving the sustainability agenda, as well as delivering vital nutritional benefits? Is Asia ripe for the arrival of cultured products, spanning meat, seafood and dairy?

At the Growth Asia Summit 2022 Singapore conference I will be joining speakers from Blackmores, Yili, Kirin, Suntory, GSK, H&H, NUH, Temasek Polytechnic, Factors Group, BYHEALTH and major brands, innovative suppliers, leading academics and a whole host of industry experts to shine the spotlight on the future of protein innovation.

With Asia tipped to be the largest region for plant-based food consumption in the $21bn global finished product market by 2025, we’ll be looking at the very latest developments in this category.

See you there!
