I have just returned from my first evokeAG event in Adelaide, even more energized for our upcoming Future Food Asia Conference.

In attendance were many interesting on-farm solutions – ranging from robotic picking and packing solutions, vision-based AI for automating quality control for meat processors, wearable tech to neutralize methane, to aviation deterrent and wildlife management technology. Far more than the handful of food tech solutions that were adding more variety of plant-based proteins to an already shaky market. Is Australia on the wrong side of history?

While I am aware that to address the looming protein gap we will need to be open to both animal and alternate protein solutions, the impact that innovation in animal protein production can have is much greater than the niche emerging alternate protein market. For reference in the US where – unlike Asia -  data is abundant, so-called “high animal welfare” meat is already about 10% of the overall meat market. Any innovation moving the needle towards more of it can have a material impact that the plant-based meat industry (still at 1.5%) does not have yet.

Back to Asia where under the dynamics of emerging middle classes we are going through a real nutrition transition: Has the “new and novel” side-tracked us from identifying challenges and opportunities facing the sector and the nutrition transition we are hoping to achieve?

Through Future Food Asia we have endeavored to enable healthy debates between people with (sometimes completely) opposite opinions. This year, we are convening the most credible spokespersons from the animal protein sector and the Good Food Institute to debate this ‘hot’ topic. To cut through all the ‘noise’ we aim to highlight the importance of listening to contrasting opinions, having the courage to disagree and having the humility to apprehend the complex nature of our food systems.

Stay tuned for more updates on the FFA agenda and early bird passes!
