FRESH New London
August Newsletter
Its August! What does that mean? It means that we are doing it ALL! We say that our mission is three fold:
Grow Food! Check!
Empower Youth! Check!
Connect Communities! Check!

In this edition of our newsletter, we can honestly say that we are doing solid work in all three of our "buckets" right now (and still managing to get out a newsletter... that's part (but not all) of the Connecting Communities piece).

We invite you to our star studded (with actual stars, under the beautiful New London night sky) Farm to Pier dinner (also part of the Connecting Communities work)

We share some of the insights and experiences our great Youth Crew has had this summer and we invite you to hear it from them directly at our upcoming FRESH-entation (see invite below). That's the empower youth part!

And, of course, we are growing food and improving our Urban Farm and Education Center. We share some pictures of that too!

Renovating the Kid's Wild Space Into
A Multi-Generational Space for Play, Learning and Relaxation
The thornless blackberry tunnels collapsed. The sand box got weedy. The logs started to rot.

Our Kid's Wild Play Area, designed and built in 2009, was due for a renovation...

And it is in process!

Above is a dramatic view through the lattice of our new shade structure into our Wednesday workcrew which included a huge team from YouthGrow in Worcester! Thanks, friends!

Based on the the advice and vision of parents of small kids who play at the FRESH Urban Farm, the feedback of youth who are there almost every day through the summer months, and the ideas of gardeners and volunteers who are seeking beauty,  FRESH convened a few work days to renovate our Kid's Space to be a multi-use space that has something for everyone.

Place to play? Tunnels through blackberries, dome that will be covered in fruiting vines, dig pits and free play space!
Place for youth to meet and have workshops? Shade structure covered in bamboo that will trellis fruiting vines, log "stadium" seating and (hopefully) a hammock!
Place for tired youth and volunteers to relax at the end of the work day? We did say the word "Hammock!"
