FRESH News
May 2014
As the days get longer and warmer, the plants (and people!) here at FRESH get happier and busier. In case you missed the reminders, our seedling sale is TOMORROW (Saturday, May 24) from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Community Garden. But beyond that, we've been up to plenty this month -- have a look!
In this issue:
  • FRESH youth shine at statewide food justice conference for teens
  • Calling motivated teens: FRESH is recruiting for summer crew
  • Farm-to-school Initiative update

Youth grow, and lead, the food movement
The state's first youth-focused food justice conference, called Grow the Movement, brought together youth from organizations throughout the state last weekend to examine their place in the food system, and how they can make it fairer and healthier for all.

Youth attended workshops on different ways to express their ideas, including healthy movement, gardening and cooking, drama and public art. In addition, three FRESH junior staff designed and led a special workshop for adults on how to ensure teens' input in their organizations isn't just heard, but valued.
We put together FRESH's photos and those of the conference organizers, Americorps VISTA volunteers from FRESH and seven other food- and social justice-focused organizations throughout the state, to tell the story of FRESH's amazing day.

Calling motivated NL teens: FRESH seeks summer crew!
FRESH's 2014 spring crew plays a food-justice-themed "Red Light, Green Light" game on the blacktop at the Community Garden.
It's that time of year again! We're hiring up to 15 New London-resident teens to be part of our six-week summer crew program.
Crew work hard and play hard, and earn a stipend for all they do. They spend a lot of long hours learning organic gardening through growing healthy food at our farm, and they that delicious food into subsidized and senior housing through our Mobile Market. With their new friends, they learn how the food system is, and dream big about what it could be.
Crew workshops focus on team-building, leadership, professionalism and food preparation and preservation. Youth-led workshops will include issues of social justice in the food system.
Interested in joining our crew?
High school students (entering 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grades in the fall; recent high school graduates are accepted only after we have exhausted our waiting lists) are eligible to learn practical agriculture and professional skills, and earn stipends, as part of our youth crew.
The six-week summer crew program runs Tuesdays through Saturdays beginning July 8.
For more information, visit our website. Applications are due June 16.
Farm-to-school stakeholders collaborate, create shared vision
The Farm Fresh New London County Schools Initiative hosted its first Farm to School Advisory Council meeting this past Tuesday at Mahan School in Norwich.

The Advisory Council will shape the future of farm-to-school work in the county and help create innovative solutions to bring more local food into public schools.

Stakeholders from all sectors -- including youth, teachers, food-service directors, farmers and local community leaders -- attended to
create a shared vision for Farm to School in New London County. During breakout sessions, FRESH youth facilitated discussion with other teens, telling them about the work they do at FRESH to build a better food system.

The initiative also got a beautiful new logo this week. Special thanks to Jesse Good, of Cummings and Good, for his design work.
