It's not uncommon for me to cross paths with authors whose books are only of interest to incredibly narrow niche audiences.
When I recommend that they join some affinity groups, the question that inevitably follows is, "what exactly are affinity groups?"
Put simply, affinity groups are communities of people who share a common interest.
So, you might wonder, how can affinity groups assist in selling your books?
Let's dive into an example. I once had a conversation with a prospective customer who penned a book on a hyper-specific aspect of neuroscience. I told him I couldn't promote it because his niche subject was not a good fit for my "general" audience.
Instead, I pointed him in the direction of affinity groups. I suggested he scour Facebook for neuroscience groups. Out of curiosity I did a search and was totally gobsmacked at the number of neuroscience-centric groups! Granted, not every group was a perfect match for his work, but there were plenty to kick-start his promotional journey.
The reality is, there are groups out there for almost everything under the sun.
