| Devotional Song genres abound in both Carnatic and Hindustani music systems. Thousands of songs exist in the unique Bhakti traditions of different regions and in different languages. In the north Indian stream of the two main genres are Bhajan & Abhang.
- Bhajans are the devotional songs of saint-poets like Meerabai, Kabir, Surdas and many others.
- Abhangs are bhakti songs of the Marathi saint poets such as Tukaram, Namdeo, Gnyaneswar, Janabaai etc.
These devotional song forms have been an integral part of South Indian Sampradaya Bhajana tradition (naamaavali) for hundreds of years, and have also featured significantly in our concert/stage performance repertoire -- Bhajans, since the mid-1900s, thanks mainly due to MS Amma & Abhangs especially in the past 20 years.
This workshop will endeavour to teach you comprehensively:
- Two bhajans of Meera and two Abhangs.
- With full emphasis on the expressiveness of the genre, involved and detailed musical settings, lyric meaning, pronunciation, and explosive elaboration of all these coming together.
