Subject: Get paying clients, fast! (step-by-step plan)

Are those who you’re serving able and willing to pay you, Friend?

Last week, a friend reached out with a problem. He had been struggling to find paying clients for a while.

Even though was applying some of the marketing principles I teach, and serving his audience with the utmost dedication, he wasn’t getting paid accordingly.

He asked for my help, and together we spotted the problem.

His audience couldn’t afford his services. He needed a new ICP.

However, as he has been writing to market his services, he’s also realized how much he enjoys it. And he’s darn good at it too!

Now he’s considering offering ghostwriting services…

That’s a very competitive space, I mentioned. Which isn't necessarily a problem, if he finds a way to differentiate himself.

Now, let’s break this down.

My friend could offer to write:

  • Social media posts

  • Video scripts

  • Blog articles

  • Emails

  • Etc.

He knew the niche he wanted to write for. One he loved and would fulfill him to write about.

So, we found a clear ICP and a specific writing service they might need, are willing to pay for, and can afford to do so.

Finally, we needed a marketing plan to reach his new prospects.

And while he started thinking about all the things he learned from me and my content, I told him to forget it all.

“You’re starting fresh. You need clients, fast. You need to validate what you’re doing. Let’s keep this very simple and get you your first clients.” - I said.

I gave him a very basic plan, which included outreach.

I could see the confusion in his face, “the inbound guy telling me to do outreach?!”

I’m a marketing strategist first and foremost, and your marketing strategy needs to help you achieve your financial goals as quickly and efficiently as possible with the resources you have available to you.

He’s starting anew and needs paying clients. He’s on his own his own and has limited time.

Here’s how this looks like:

  1. Find your ICP on LinkedIn & forums (e.g. Reddit)

  2. Make a list of at least 50 of the ones who seem to need your writing and can pay you for it.

  3. Stalk them and learn about their problems. What are their biggest pains when writing themselves?

  4. Reach out to them one by one praising what they do (because you genuinely appreciate it) and telling them how you could help them with their most pressing concerns:

    1. Save them time with their writing.

    2. Improve their amazing content for consumption.

  5. Send them a free example of how you’d do it for them.

  6. Repeat until you have at least 3-5 clients.

This is not only the fastest way to get your first clients, but also validates the demand for your service and helps you get better at what you do.

So, if you’re struggling to get your first paying clients, follow this same strategy.

The only things I didn’t reveal in this email was the exact service we picked considering demand and the outreach method, for obvious reasons.

But I’m happy to come up with something specific for your situation, if you need. Just reply to this email and tell me exactly what service you offer and to whom and I’ll give you some pointers.

P.S.: Inbound systems can save you a bunch of time and automate your client acquisition process, but first you need to validate your business and serve some clients.

If you have a validated offer and want to talk about automating your client acquisition, feel free to send me an email, I’d love to get on a call with you.
