If you look up the term “guru,” several definitions are offered. In Hindi, a guru is a "Hindu teacher or spiritual guide." In Buddhism, a guru is a spiritual teacher, especially one who imparts initiation. In common use here, a guru is a person with knowledge and expertise, an influential teacher and popular expert.
There are probably a lot of spiritual type gurus in existence, many of them going by the title Baba, a title of significant respect. In several cultures, Baba translates to “father,” but there are also a number of famous Baba type spiritual gurus such as Baba Ram Das an American spiritual leader of Yoga, and Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the creator of Transcendental Meditation.
When I was alittle squirt and couldn’t talk very well yet, I always called my grandpa “Baba.” He told me about hunting when he was a boy, and suggested he and I could go on a hunt. I was excited and told my mother, “I’m going with the rabbits to shoot Baba!”
What brings up the thought of gurus is an event we’re having here in our shop and retreat from July 13 – 15. Two gurus will be teaching at this event. Mary Yoder, who is a HandiQuilter National Educator, and Dr. Donna Smith, Director of Education here at Fox Country Quilts, will be teaming up to present a special program called “Explore Longarm Quilting.”
Titles to their sessions include Free Motion Quilting Foundations, Mandala Magic, Happy Feet (emphasizing some of the versatility of longarm machines), and Exploring Pro-Stitcher Hands on (exploring a variety of interesting capabilities of Pro-Stitcher).
These two ladies are definitely gurus, people with above average knowledge and expertise, and influential teachers and popular experts. And they are especially good at imparting initiation into the wide possibilities of longarm quilting and Pro-Stitcher, beyond just the initial basics. It’s not too late to sign up for this event. Three days of lecture and hands-on practice, with an optional two-nights stay at our amazing retreat.
