Understanding Teacher Quality Standards for Indigenous Teachings in Alberta

Dear Educators,

As we strive to improve the education of all students in Alberta, it is essential to understand the teacher quality standards in regards to Indigenous teachings.

The Alberta Education has developed guidelines for incorporating Indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing into our curriculum, and ensuring that our teaching practices are respectful and culturally responsive.

Here are some key points to keep in mind when understanding the teacher quality standards for Indigenous teachings in Alberta:

  1. Cultural proficiency: Alberta Education emphasizes the importance of cultural proficiency, which includes understanding and valuing the cultures and perspectives of Indigenous peoples.

This includes understanding the history and ongoing impact of colonization on Indigenous communities, and taking steps to address and undo the harm caused by these historical injustices.

  2. Curriculum integration: Alberta Education emphasizes the importance of integrating Indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing into the curriculum, and providing students with a deeper understanding of Indigenous cultures and perspectives.

This includes incorporating traditional stories and teachings, and using land-based learning activities.

  3. Collaboration with Indigenous communities: Alberta Education emphasizes the importance of working with Indigenous communities and organizations to ensure that the incorporation of Indigenous teachings and perspectives is done in a respectful and responsible manner.

This includes seeking guidance and input from Indigenous communities on how to effectively incorporate Indigenous teachings into the curriculum.

  4. Professional development: Alberta Education emphasizes the importance of ongoing professional development for educators on incorporating Indigenous teachings and perspectives into the curriculum. This includes training on cultural proficiency, curriculum integration, and collaboration with Indigenous communities.

  5. Alberta Education also recommends the use of the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) Education Policy Framework, which guides the integration of FNMI perspectives, knowledge, and ways of knowing into the curriculum and classrooms.

By understanding and adhering to the teacher quality standards for Indigenous teachings in Alberta, we can ensure that our teaching practices are respectful and culturally responsive, and that our students receive a more inclusive and enriching education.

Sincerely,

Patrick Mitsuing,
