Subject: One Important Lesson That Educators Need to Know About Indigenous

Indigenous Peoples Don't Need Saving

Dear Reader,

The idea that Indigenous people need to be "saved" by outsiders is a harmful and outdated concept that has been used to justify colonialism, oppression, and the forced assimilation of Indigenous peoples.

Here are some reasons why Indigenous people do not need saving:

  1. Indigenous peoples have their own cultures, languages, and traditions that are rich and diverse. They have been able to sustain themselves for thousands of years and have unique knowledge and wisdom about their land, resources, and way of life.

  2. Indigenous peoples have the right to self-determination and self-government. They have the right to decide what is best for themselves and their communities, and should not be forced to conform to Western norms or expectations.

  3. Indigenous peoples have faced and continue to face systemic discrimination, oppression, and marginalization. This is not a problem that can be solved by outsiders "saving" them, but rather requires systemic change and the recognition of Indigenous rights and sovereignty.

  4. Indigenous peoples have their own solutions and ways to heal and overcome the effects of colonization and oppression. They should be given the resources, support, and space to work on their own healing and self-empowerment.

In conclusion, Indigenous people don't need saving, they need to be respected, heard and their rights upheld.

The idea of saving Indigenous people is a colonial construct that perpetuates harmful stereotypes and undermines the agency of Indigenous peoples.

It's important to recognize the historical and ongoing injustices faced by Indigenous peoples, and to actively work towards decolonization and reconciliation.

Best,
