"It's More Than Just Orange Shirt Day"

Dear Foundational Knowledge Reader,

As we approach Orange Shirt Day on September 30th, it's essential to recognize that this observance is more than just a day for photos and donning orange shirts.

It's an opportunity for reflection, education, and a commitment to lasting change.

The True Meaning: Orange Shirt Day began as a way to remember and honor the experiences of Indigenous children in Canadian residential schools. It's a day to pay tribute to the survivors, acknowledge the intergenerational trauma they endured, and promote healing and reconciliation in Indigenous communities.

Moving Beyond a Photo-Op: While wearing an orange shirt on this day is a meaningful gesture, it's crucial to go beyond the symbolism. This is an opportunity to create a plan for ongoing support and education, moving beyond this single day.

Remember the Survivors: We must always remember the residential school survivors and their stories. Their resilience and strength serve as a reminder of the importance of our commitment to change.

Positive Aspects of the Day: If you seek a positive aspect to this day, consider how you can support initiatives that promote what Indigenous children in residential schools were denied—practicing culture, speaking Indigenous languages, supporting healthy families, and fostering togetherness. These are the building blocks of healing.

A Plan for Ongoing Learning: Let's make a commitment not to let this become a one-time event that we check off our list for the year. Create a plan for continuous education and engagement throughout the year. It's a journey, not a destination.

Call to Action: Here are two ways you can take meaningful action:

  1. Attend an Indigenous Event: Join us at the Red Deer International Powwow at the Peavey Mart Centrium Arena, starting October 13th through 15th, 2023. This event offers a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in Indigenous culture. Visit pwtpowwow.com for more details.

  2. Participate in a Free TRC Webinar: Discover a proven game plan for your ongoing learning and impact in Indigenous families and communities. Register for a free Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) webinar at truthreconciliation.com. It's a step towards a better understanding and a more inclusive future.

Let's make this Orange Shirt Day a starting point for lasting change and continuous education. Together, we can contribute to healing and reconciliation in our communities.

Thank you for your commitment to making a difference.

Warm regards,
