Subject: How Educators Can Integrate Indigenous Teachings in The Classroom

Integrating Indigenous Teachings into the Classroom

Dear Educators,

As we strive to create a more inclusive and culturally responsive classroom, it is important to consider the incorporation of Indigenous teachings and perspectives.

Integrating Indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing into our curriculum not only honours the traditional cultures of Indigenous peoples, but also enriches the education of all students.

Here are some ways educators can integrate Indigenous teachings into their classroom:

  1. Incorporate traditional stories and teachings. Many Indigenous cultures have a rich tradition of storytelling and teachings passed down through generations. By sharing these stories and teachings with students, we can provide a deeper understanding of Indigenous cultures and ways of understanding the world.

  2. Invite Indigenous guest speakers. Inviting Indigenous community members to speak in the classroom can provide students with valuable insights and perspectives, and help to build connections between the classroom and the community.

  3. Use land-based learning. Many Indigenous cultures have a deep connection to the land, and incorporating land-based learning activities can provide students with a deeper understanding of Indigenous perspectives on the environment.

  4. Use Indigenous languages. Incorporating Indigenous languages in the classroom can help to preserve and promote Indigenous cultures, and also provides students with valuable language learning opportunities.

  5. Collaborate with Indigenous communities. By working with Indigenous communities and organizations, educators can ensure that the incorporation of Indigenous teachings and perspectives is done in a respectful and responsible manner.

By incorporating Indigenous teachings and perspectives into our curriculum, we can create a more inclusive and culturally responsive classroom, and provide all students with a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Sincerely,

Patrick Mitsuing,
