3 Ways to Being a Better Ally

As we navigate the complexities of our world, it is important that we take the time to reflect on the ways in which we can support and be an ally to Indigenous peoples.

Here are 3 ways to take action:

  1. Educate yourself. Learn about the history, cultures, and current issues facing Indigenous peoples. Read books, articles, and watch documentaries written by Indigenous authors, scholars and filmmakers. Understand the ongoing impacts of colonization and the ongoing struggle for self-determination and rights.

  2. Listen and learn from Indigenous peoples. Seek out opportunities to engage with Indigenous peoples and communities and actively listen to their perspectives. Seek to understand their experiences and perspectives, and be open to learning from and being challenged by them.

  3. Take action. Support Indigenous-led organizations and initiatives, and advocate for policies and actions that support Indigenous peoples and their rights. Use your privilege and platforms to amplify Indigenous voices and advocate for change.

It's important to remember that being an ally is a continuous process and requires a commitment to learning, reflection, and action.

It is also important to recognize that Indigenous peoples are not a monolithic group, and the ways of supporting them will depend on the specific community and the issues they are facing.

As we continue to navigate the complexities of our world, it is important that we remain committed to being an ally to Indigenous peoples and continue to listen and learn from their perspectives.

Sincerely,

Patrick Mitsuing,
