5 Tips to Learning about Indigenous Peoples of Canada

Dear subscriber,

As we navigate the complexities of our world, it is important that we take the time to learn about and understand the diverse cultures and experiences of Indigenous peoples in Canada.

Here are 5 tips to help you learn more about Indigenous peoples and the ongoing struggle for self-determination and rights:

  1. Read books and articles written by Indigenous authors. There are many Indigenous authors and scholars whose work provides important insights into the lives and experiences of Indigenous peoples.

  2. Learn about the history and ongoing impacts of colonization on Indigenous peoples. Understand the impact of residential schools, forced relocation, and other policies that have had a devastating impact on Indigenous peoples.

  3. Get to know and engage with Indigenous peoples and communities. This can be done by attending events, participating in cultural activities, or simply having conversations with Indigenous peoples.

  4. Support Indigenous-led organizations and initiatives. This can include volunteering, donating, or supporting businesses and organizations that are owned and operated by Indigenous peoples.

  5. Educate yourself on the current issues and struggles that Indigenous peoples are facing. This can include issues related to land rights, resource extraction, and self-government.

It is important to remember that learning about Indigenous peoples is an ongoing process, and requires humility, a willingness to listen, and an openness to change one's own perspectives.

We must also recognize that Indigenous peoples are not a monolithic group, there are over 600 different First Nations, Inuit and Metis nations in Canada, each with their own cultures, languages and traditions.

As we continue to learn about and understand Indigenous peoples in Canada, it is important that we remain committed to this process and continue to listen and learn from the perspectives of Indigenous peoples.

Sincerely,

Patrick Mitsuing,
