Looking back on 2016, the Board of Directors of the Friends of the Middle River is pleased with the progress we made.
|
|
- We sponsored a booth at
Earth Day and at Kites & Critters in Staunton in April.
- We completed our
benthic monitoring at nine locations along Middle River in the spring and fall. Those results are available on our web site.
- In April, FOMR
volunteers planted trees for an elderly landowner near Middlebrook. |
|
- In June, we helped
celebrate Chesapeake Bay Awareness Week by conducting tours and providing
benthic demonstrations at "River Walk at the Farm" in Swoope, VA,
hosted by Jeanne & Bobby Whitescarver.
- In
July, we started our second year of monthly E. coli bacteria monitoring in the
Upper Middle River area, including the main stem of Middle River, Back Creek,
and Eidson Creek.
- FOMR volunteers are assisted
in this effort by teachers and students from both Riverheads High School and
Shenandoah Valley Governor's School.
- All
results are on our web site www.friendsofthemiddleriver.org.
|
|
- In
August, 70 volunteers helped clean up Middle River from the bridge over the
River on Rt. 250 at Eastwood downstream to Ft. Defiance.
- Also in August, over 110
Friends attended our annual "Friends Fest" barbeque picnic and kayak
raffle along Middle River near Verona.

|
In 2017, we plan to: (1) use
our monitoring data to advocate for water quality improvements; and (2)
organize events to get more "Friends" on the River.
If you feel that we have earned your support, please consider a
year-end tax-deductible donation. |
|
Your donation will help us to continue the activities and events that promote the stewardship and enjoyment of Middle River and its tributaries.
Donating is easy: (1) click here to make a donation online through PayPal, or (2) send a check to us at: FOMR, P.O. Box 131, Verona, VA 24482
Donations can be any amount, but if you would like to think of your donation as a membership, we recommend $30 for an individual "Friend" or $40 for a family "Friend."
