The 20th Meeting of the Parties (MOP20) was a high point, marked by the participation of eight ministers from the Congo Basin and more than 600 participants, illustrating the importance and scope of our partnership. The CBFP proved once again that it is an essential forum for dialogue and cooperation. The diversity and commitment of the stakeholders present were a driving force for emulation and fruitful collaboration. Finally, the exemplary cooperation with the Congolese authorities greatly contributed to the success of this meeting.

The 20th Meeting of the Parties to the CBFP (RDP20) was held in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, from 3 to 5 June 2024. The Youth Forum for the Forests of Central Africa took place in Kinshasa, DRC, on 31 May and 1 June 2024. The event was co-organised by France and Gabon with the support of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the host country, as part of the Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP).

Summaries of sides events

La Facilitation des Républiques Française et Gabonaise du PFBC a lancé le 09 Avril 2024 un appel à propositions pour accueillir des événements parallèles (« side events ») pendant la 20ème Réunion des Parties (RdP20) du PFBC à Kinshasa, République démocratique du Congo, du 3 au 5 Juin 2024. Plus de 100 propositions ont été reçues et 70 retenues.


CAFI took an active part in the 20th Meeting of the Parties of the Congo Basin Forest Partnership, from 3 to 5 June 2024 in Kinshasa, DRC, by co-organising two major side events with IUCN and UNDP, among others. The theme of the first side-event was: Catalysing sustainable growth in Central Africa's tropical forests through deforestation-free investment, and the second side-event was: Platform on Financial & Digital Instruments for Tropical Forests.


In a panel discussion focusing on agroforestry and agribusiness, the consortium of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Rikolto and the Catholic University of Bukavu presented solutions for sustainable and effective land management around the Itombwe Reserve and the Kahuzi-Biega National Park, with two topics for debate....


The aim of this side event, which took place on Tuesday 4 June from 1.30 to 2.30 pm, was to present the services offered by LGFANPN in the context of support for the fight against wildlife crime, as well as its capacity to develop scientific cooperation to improve knowledge of wildlife and in particular the forest elephant. The presentations were followed by a round table discussion, with the participation of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the Centre national de la recherche scientifique et technique du Gabon (CENAREST), the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and the Agence française de développement (AFD).


Organised on 5 June 2024 by the Centre international de formation et de recherche pour l'environnement et le développement durable (CIFREDD) working in consortium WFRIC with World initiative for Nature (WIN); Rise and Shine and Fondation Lance d'Afrique in collaboration with the Embassy of Burundi in Kinshasa, the side event had among other objectives to better inform CBFP partners on financing opportunities, climate initiatives for Burundi, explore and align the priorities of the Consortium with those of COMIFAC and the CBFP.


In Gabon, the difficulty of coexistence between humans and elephants is extremely acute. With 95,000 elephants spread over 90% of the country, interaction between humans and elephants is becoming increasingly difficult. It is important to define a new conservation policy, which implies new land-use planning. These decisions will have to be taken using a holistic approach that integrates the social and biological sciences.


The CAFI/FAO DDD project presented the latest results of analyses of forest cover change and associated direct drivers for the years 2015-2022. The aim of this session was to address the following questions: Are deforestation and degradation increasing at the regional scale since 2015? What are the causes, implications and prospects for experts in the Congo Basin? The discussion was structured around a round table with representatives from the six countries in the region



A platform named “Congo Basin Monitoring and Evaluation Database” combining several key sources of information has been developed by WWF to support the management and development of conservation and research projects. This tool has the advantage of being transversal to several possible topics and themes in the field of natural resource management.



The objective of this side event on 4 June 2024 was move away from rapid conflict mitigation and prevention towards to holistic and integrated coexistence programs between human and forest elephants in rainforest of the Congo Basin.





Side event organized by the Sustainable Wildlife Management Programme on the 04/06 from 8h30 to 9h30 am. United Nations member states are committed to reducing hunger, improving health, and conserving natural resources through the Sustainable Development Goals. Additionally, the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework aims to conserve 30% of terrestrial and marine areas by 2030, promoting sustainable wildlife management and equitable benefits. However, in Central Africa, the unsustainable wild meat trade threatens food security and biodiversity, making these goals challenging to achieve.


The Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) Programme presented its innovative Legal Hub at the recent 20th Meeting of Parties (MoP20) of the Congo Basin Forest Partnership. This event was held in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), from 3 to 5 June, 2024. A specific side-event titled "A Tool to Connect Different Sources of Law" showcased the Legal Hub’s critical role in enhancing the legal frameworks governing wildlife management across multiple countries, including the sub-region.


On 04 June 2024, in the Lubumbashi lounge of the Pullman Hotel in Kinshasa, Field Legality Advisory Group (FLAG), World Resources Institute (WRI), Observatoire de la Gouvernance Forestière (OGF), US Forest Service (USFS) and the Cellule de Contrôle et de Vérification du Ministère de l'Environnement et Développement Durable (CCV-MEDD), hosted a hybrid event on the sidelines of the twentieth meeting of the Parties to the Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP). The aim of the event was to stimulate debate on the role of stakeholders and to identify the challenges involved in combating environmental crime in a concerted manner.

The UK recently concluded its participation in the 20th Meeting of the Parties of the Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP) with a reception with donor countries at the British Residence. At the event, Alyson King, UK Ambassador to the DRC, and Maggie Charnley, International Forestry Officer at the UK Foreign Office (FCDO), represented the UK, co-chair of the donors, at the conference organised by the Congolese government..
