| | | | | Belgium to take over the Facilitation of the Congo Basin Forest Partnership in 2018-2019
Belgium, a member of the partnership
since the initiative was launched in 2002, has just announced that it
will be taking over the facilitation of the initiative for the next two
years (2018- 2019). Mr. François-Xavier de Donnea, an Honorary Member of
Parliament and Minister of State of the Kingdom of Belgium, will act as
CBFP Facilitator during these two years.
|
|
Belgium has agreed to
resume the Facilitation of the Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP)
for the period 2018-2019. Belgium will thus be taking over from the
European Commission, which did an outstanding job of establishing a
structure which has enhanced CBFP governance, which the Belgian
Facilitation can now build on.

In a bid to help Gabon’s participatory forestry sector reach its full
potential, the Ministry of Forestry and the Environment has conducted a
study to review participatory forestry with the technical assistance of
the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The FAO’s
framework for assessing the extent and effectiveness of Participatory
Forestry was used to conduct the study. A validation workshop on the
study was held from 21 to 22 February 2018. |

Pangolins are burrowing animals with
overlapping scales; conical heads; and long, sticky tongues that enable
them to eat mostly ants and termites. Nocturnal and secretive, they have
been difficult for scientists to study in the wild. They’ve also become
the most trafficked wild mammals in the world, according to the
Zoological Society of London.

Peatlands take up only 3% of the earth’s
surface yet they store almost 550 billion tons of carbon, twice as much
as all the world’s forests together. Peatlands are potentially one of the
most effective tools for combating climate change. By preserving and
restoring the world’s peatlands, we can reduce CO2 emissions and revive a
fundamental ecosystem that delivers several benefits, including their
role as natural carbon sinks.
