Declaration which it has incorporated into the text. Please find

On 31 January 2019, the Prince de Galles
hotel in Douala, Cameroon, hosted a Workshop to present the results
achieved by project on fostering the conservation and sustainable use of
biodiversity and climate change measures in COMIFAC countries. The
meeting was held under the aegis of the Executive Secretariat of COMIFAC
and the Japanese Cooperation (JICA).

The Interim Strategic Plan (2019-2022) of the
Organization for Wildlife Conservation in Africa (OCFSA), which
supplements the Illustrated Briefing Note we recently developed in
consultation with stakeholders and key stakeholders in wildlife
conservation, capture what the intergovernmental agency must do in the
next four years. |

This report is intended to provide
guidance to develop enabling legal frameworks governing community
forestry. It offers recommendations and a framework for reflection for
all actors engaged in creating, implementing or revising laws on
community forestry, and for civil society in particular.

The seventeenth session of the Committee for the Review of the
Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 17) of the United Nations
Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), will be held at the Arthur
Chung Conference Center (ACCC) from 28 to 30 January 2019 in
Georgetown, Guyana.

A global water crisis looms on the horizon and is fast approaching due
to the exacerbating effects of global population growth and climate
change in many parts of the world. More than 50 scientists from 20
countries collaborated on a global study of the links between forests,
water, climate and humans.

“Women’s role in managing forests other
natural resources can no longer be forgotten or overlooked,” said
Rosalie Matondo, Minister of Forest Economy of the Republic of Congo, in
a video played during a round table conference on Women, Forests and

On Wednesday, 28 November 2018, 23 participants attending the Congo
Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP) Meeting in Brussels, Belgium, gathered
to discuss priorities, gaps, and opportunities for wildlife
conservation capacity in the region. Organizations were invited to
discuss what they support and why.

Excellent results were demonstrated from an innovative Visa platform and
partnership with UNFCCC, where nearly 20,000 taps (19,723) resulted in
US$ 67,453 generated for the Adaptation Fund during the COP 24 climate
change conference in Katowice, Poland to support the Fund’s mission in
helping vulnerable communities in developing countries adapt to climate
change. |

This volume also feeds into a policy debate between African Union’s
nations, citizens, entrepreneurs and researchers. It aims to be part of a
new co-operation between countries and regions focused on mutual
learning and the preservation of common goods. This report is the result
of a partnership between the African Union Commission and the OECD
Development Centre. |

Universities of Nairobi, Helsinki and British Columbia. After graduating
from the University of British Columbia in 1989, he had a 5-year stint

The first substantive session of the Ad hoc Open-ended Working Group
towards a Global Pact for the Environment convened on Monday, 14 January
2019 at the United Nations Office at Nairobi, Kenya. During the
week-long session, delegates considered the report of the United Nations
Secretary-General titled “Gaps in international environmental law and
environment related instruments: towards a global pact for the
environment” (A/73/419).

climate change conference in Katowice, Poland. |

UN Climate Change, 15 January 2019 – The provisional program for Africa
Climate Week 2019, which is being hosted from 18–22 March in Accra,
Ghana, has now been published online – showcasing a dynamic schedule of
activities that will demonstrate enhanced ambition across the continent.

Cameroon villages he knew as a child, he found some of them totally
abandoned because the land had become too degraded to support villagers’
livelihoods. He was horrified and asked himself, “Why did I go to
university, if not to make a difference?”

Zug, Switzerland & Ibadan, Nigeria, December 20, 2018 — The
International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and RightMesh
have signed an MoU to design, development, and test a mobile application
that will allow smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa to capture
and share data about crop disease without using Internet or mobile data.

The DSA's annual conference in 2019 will take place at the Open
University, which celebrates its 50th birthday that year. The conference
will focus centrally on "Opening up Development", while also
encompassing the broad range of development studies interests. As with DSA2018,
we will have sessions for early career scholars - including on
publishing and an ECR plenary; as well as assisting participants from
the Global South to attend.

The EU Carbon-CAP project assembled a comprehensive portfolio of
consumer initiatives in order to assess the potential total impact of
consumer options on national carbon footprints. Existing evaluations of
behavioural change have focused primarily on direct energy reductions,
typically in households and buildings. However, changes in consumer
demand have deeper impacts via their upstream supply chains.

Nature-10 Groups to Watch in 2019. Some of the most important change agents are not the most visible.LET'S BE FRANK: 2018 was not exactly a
banner year for the planet. Nearly every major environmental assessment
presented grim results: crucial habitats like tropical forests continue
to disappear; wildlife populations declined 60% over the last 40 years;
and, perhaps most alarming, we’re failing to make the progress we need
to keep the climate within safe boundaries.

The Brussels meeting, one of the activities of the Congo Basin Forest
Partnership, was a time for discussion, forecasts, analysis, soul
searching, but also an opportunity for advocacy on the part of various
partners who believe in the future of the Congo Basin forests, the
world’s second ecological lung, after the Amazon.

Central African Forests Forever, first published in 2017, takes
readers to the heart of the continent, introducing them to the people
and wildlife of this region.
Its author, independent communications consultant Meindert Brouwer,
says the book also functions as a tool for sharing information about
efforts to address poverty and environmental issues in the region. Mongabay spoke with Brouwer to learn more about his motivations and the reception of his work in Central Africa.

This briefing shows that to ensure long-term benefits for people and
forests it is imperative that community forests are grounded in
traditional land tenure and forest management systems, as opposed to
being driven by outsiders. The briefing also stresses the important role
that community mapping can play in this process when it is truly
participatory.

The German government has called for European “binding regulations” to
set a standard for sustainably-produced cocoa. The call was made as
part of a national 10-point Action Plan for cocoa, launched on 23 January by German Agriculture Minister Julia Kloeckner and Development Minister Gerd Mueller.

Katowice, Poland (December 12, 2018) — In a powerful nod of recognition
to the Adaptation Fund’s effective and tangible work on the ground for
the most vulnerable countries and a strong signal of raising global
ambition for urgently needed adaptation finance, several contributor
governments announced new funding commitments to the Fund at its
Contributor Dialogue on Dec. 11 at the COP 24 climate change conference.

For two weeks, the conference has brought together thousands of climate
action decision-makers, advocates and activists, with one key objective:
adopting global guidelines for the 197 parties of the 2015 Paris Agreement,
when countries committed to limiting global warming to less than 2°C –
and as close as possible to 1.5° – above pre-industrial levels.
