Adapting To Adopting In The New Normal Abnormal
Unless you had a crystal ball last winter, it would have been hard to predict the current state of things.  One thing that we certainly couldn't have predicted was that, despite not being able to have in person visits between adopters and the cats in our care, our adoptions would not only not decrease, but for the months of quarantine would increase.
A few fabulous happy tails of those adoptions are below.

We absolutely could not have continued to help cats and kittens find their way to forever homes without the support of our fosters, volunteers transporting the cats where they needed to be, and our generous donors who enabled us to keep up with our one real expense - veterinary bills.

Now more than ever, we need your support.  Medical bills continue for our cats in foster, and with shelters only now beginning to reopen to adoptions and to intake, and with kitten season in full crisis mode, we are besieged with pleas to take cats and kittens.  We hope you'll help us to continue to say "yes" to the kitties who need us -               Please consider donating now!

Smile!

We'll admit that in an effort to stay home, we've been ordering a lot online, much of it through Amazon.
What if you could do that, and help your favorite rescue at the same time?

Well... you can!

The image below will take you to smile.amazon.com, where you can select Feline Foundation of Greater Washington to receive a portion of every purchase you make.

It doesn't change the price to you, but it can mean extra cash for FFGW!

Please think about us when you shop!
Here's what FFGW did last month!
We focused on some hard-to-adopt cats... and the results were amazing!
Cats with Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) can live long, healthy lives.  The link below explains about FIV, and why it should not be a death sentence for shelter cats:

Many rescues won't intake FIV+ cats, however, because they can take a long time to find homes.  FFGW prides itself on not shying away from these cats, because we know how wonderful they can be - it's as if they appreciate the extra chance!

Cats like - Pekoe!

Pekoe's Shelter Card

Pekoe waited an entire year in one of our partner shelters hoping someone would take him home.

When one of our volunteers went to the shelter to transport to us several other kittens, she sent us this movie... (click below)
How could we not!

And no sooner did Pekoe arrive... then did he go forever home!

Not only that - but he is famous, he was featured as the Arlington Pet of the Week  AND his photo won a contest and he'll appear in a calendar!

From McKenzie & Margarita, Pekoe's Adopters:

After being surrendered by his owner, adopted, then returned to the shelter when he was diagnosed FIV+, Pekoe finally found his forever home just a few weeks ago! Why anyone would give up this loving kitty is a mystery! Pekoe’s favorite activities include cuddling, making biscuits on his new mommy, playing with feather toys, and watching neighborhood drama out the kitchen window. Those darn squirrels are at it again!

Pekoe loves getting around the apartment in unconventional ways and never takes the easy route. His human calls this Pekour (Pekoe Parkour)! Nothing will stop Pekoe from cuddling; not a book or work laptop. He’ll even get into weird positions to make a cuddle session happen!

Pekoe is so happy about his basket full of new toys and has even ripped holes in a few of them already! He recently discovered how fun blankets can be and loves wrestling with them. Pekoe gets tired easily when playing and has to take breaks but he’s proud of how quickly his stamina is improving. He’s also quickly sharing his mom’s interests such as her love of sushi (even though he’s never had any) and narwhals (even though he’s never seen one).

Pekoe and Lucky are not the only FIV+ cats in our care.  Please check out wonderful Sammy or Gregor!

Happy Tails

Ellis
Christine says "Ellis is a very energetic and loving cat. He loves to play a lot with a fake chirping bird we have.He keeps us and are other cat Oreo on our toes!"
(Looks like you finally wore him out, Christine!)

Belle
John says "Belle is settling in wonderfully. She’s very easygoing with our toddler (She appears to be at least partially deaf which no doubt helps) and very affectionate with us. She usually sleeps at the foot of our bed."

Nico
Miriam reports that Nico "settled very nicely into his forever home in DC. He has found several great napping spots around the house, is very straightforward when he wants to be snuggled, and very capable of escaping the clutches of his new parents' toddler. He enjoys sniffing around or licking up the food she throws on the floor, though. He is also practicing wearing a harness so he can hang out with his humans on the sunny stoop once in a while with a leash."

We don't think Miriam is the only one smiling in that photo!

Boomer & Bailey

Just in case you were hesitant to adopt two kittens from a litter... we bring you Boomer & Bailey!
Kathy tells us "We’ve had a great experience. The foster family was amazing and shared lots of photos, videos and updates since we weren’t able to visit in person.

The kittens arrived in our home May 22 and we’ve been busy kitten proofing EVERYTHING! They continue to outsmart us while exploring their new home and found a way to get INSIDE our couch, like it’s a kitten clubhouse!

Boomer and Bailey are full of energy, keeping our kids (also a brother and sister) entertained and will then crash for most of the afternoon, napping for hours.

The kittens’ sibling bond is incredible. Seeing them play and nap together is so sweet."

We know... you want a few more photos of these sweet boys, don't you!

HOLD THE PRESSES!  BREAKING MEWS!!
Pride Month may be over, but there's still plenty of Luck(y)!

Lucky the kitten was facing an uphill battle - with him in foster were calicos, tabbies, other brightly colored kittens... and our Lucky was not only black (and black kittens have a harder time finding homes), but Lucky was also FIV+, two strikes against a quick adoption.  But then... along came Walter.

Walter says it best in his own words...

Lucky is just the cutest little monkey I've had. I've had probably 15-20 cats over my lifetime. the guy is just special. I went in to [the foster's] house expecting to bring home a pretty calico, or some sort of "tiger" patterned cat. Lucky just charmed me, immediately...  there are toys all over the family room, but his favorite is the Diet Coke box. runs through it. pounces on stuff, so funny, such a good hiding place. He thinks we can't see his tail sticking out....
We just couldn't do it without YOU, our adopters, volunteers, and supporters.  We are forever grateful, and we appreciate your support!
It's been a "Lucky" month as your donations enable us to say "yes" to kittens like Lucky-the-kitten, and to cats like One-Eyed Lucky, who will need medical attention on his eye - but who clearly deserves a chance to love someone.  Click on the photo below to see Lucky's movie:
