Now that the kitties kiddies are back in school...

And You're Back from the Beach...
it's time to get serious about homework... and that community service requirement. At FFGW, we're strong supporters of community service. However, with most of our cats housed in foster homes. we don't have as many hands-on opportunities for our young volunteers as we'd like. But there is a way that you can get that service requirement satisfied, and it involves fluffy kittens!

If you foster a cat, or litter of kittens, and your student tracks the time spent socializing, feeding, and cleaning up after (scooping those litter boxes!), our Volunteer Coordinator at FFGW would be happy to sign off on those hours. It's a win-win: your student satisfies the requirement, you - ah, we mean, your student - gets to cuddle with some fun cats, and you make the world a better place by helping FFGW relieve overcrowded shelters.

Fostering can be for a week or two, to give a cat a break from our adoption center in the Leesburg PetSmart, for a night or two when cats come in from shelters after vet hours, or for as long as it takes to get the cat or kittens adopted. You can find all the information and an application HERE.

But Wait!
 That's Not All!

Some FFGW foster cats spend time in the adoption center at the Leesburg PetSmart, where they can be seen and often quickly adopted.

We are always looking for adult volunteers to be caretakers for the cats in the center, feeding, cleaning cages, playing with and socializing the cats.  It can also be a wonderful volunteer opportunity for responsible high schoolers who can commit to a regular weekly shift of an hour or more,  and who are accompanied during their entire volunteer shift by a parent or guardian.  (We won't tell if you want to play with the kitties yourself, as well!)

If you want to find out more about fostering or volunteering, just reply to this newsletter!
If you can't volunteer at the center in theLeesburg PetSmart, you can still help by spreading the word!

A Great - Big - FFGW...
How many people does it take to adopt a cat?

-  A LOT! -

This month, we want to thank the many people who helped FFGW in so many different ways to rescue __ cats in August!

First:
Thank you, Laurie Shoemaker!

Laurie donated 2 very valuable Club Level Seats at this month's Nationals-Braves game, which we raffled to raise over $1000, enough to vet several litters of kittens!

Thank you Laurie, for thinking out of the box (seats, that is!)

Of course, we always appreciate and need cash donations, but we also appreciate novel fundraising opportunities!
Next:

Thank you... well, this one we'll have to depend on some angel cats to convey...

A wonderful supporter named Wanda left us a bequest in her will.

Wanda truly is an angel as she helps us rescue cats even as she is no longer with us.  We are humbled and amazed at her power to do good things.

Do you want to be an angel FFGW supporter like Wanda? Talk to your lawyer or financial advisor about how to leave a bequest to FFGW in your will.

Further:

Thank you Martha Reitman, and Grace White!

You probably have seen our requests for folks to join our transport group, to help get cats from transports to fosters, from fosters to vets, and wherever else a cat needs to go.  You may even have seen us mention Martha and Grace in prior newsletters... what you may not know is that when a transport request goes out, Martha or Grace are almost always the ones there right when we need them.
That was the case last month, when we needed to step in to rescue two critically ill kittens, urgently transport them from one of our partner vets to a specialist, and after they were treated transport them to our vet to board for follow up treatment.

Martha responded right away - but Grace already had it covered, going the extra mile by waiting during the appointment and taking the kittens back to our vet afterward, so that we didn't have to beg for a second transport!

We don't know what we would do without you both, but we promise to keep recruiting more transporters to take some of the load off of you!!

Please help get cats and kittens to where they need to go! Respond to this email to be on our transport list!

A Bittersweet Thank you...

We have been exceptionally fortunate to have had Gina Ysunza on our team for the past 8 years - Gina came to us with considerable rescue experience after managing an in-store adoption center at a PetSmart, and has fostered, transported, counseled prospective adopters, made many of the flyers for events that you've seen here and in newspaper advertisements, and much more.  Anything we needed, Gina did - and somehow found the time to transport injured wildlife in Nova as well!

After a dozen years in the DC area, Gina is returning to her native California to be closer to family, and we will miss her so very much. Gina - our best wishes for this next chapter!
FFGW Volunteers Rallying Around Gina!

Last - But OH MY, Not Least!

Thank You, Adopters!

As our Clear the Shelters drive for August ended, we were incredibly grateful to find forever homes for 28 cats and kittens!

Our adopters - you're the ones that are the final piece in this incredible group effort to move cats and kittens from at risk situations in the community, and from the euthansia lists of high-kill shelters, to wonderful and loving homes.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Kitten Season isn't over... and we have many adult cats perhaps overlooked during the summer flood of kittens...
As we look back and thank everyone who helps this complicated process of rescue, we look forward to continuing to rejoice in the efforts of this wonderful village to make what we do possible.

We can always use help with fostering, with transport, with fundraising ideas and of course donations.
One way you can help this Fall is assisting with promoting FFGW in the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), the combined effort of the United Way and federal employees.
Details below!
The Combined Federal Campaign is an effort through the United Way for Federal Employees to participate in charitable giving. Under the auspices of the program, employees can select from a wide array of charities for giving.

In past years, a dedicated crew of volunteers has attended events at area Federal agencies, and spoke about FFGW. This year, some charity events will be virtual, others in person.

We need your help with two things:

Speakers!
People who can participate in the in-person or virtual events and talk about FFGW, our program, and how important giving through the CFC is to our mission.

A Videographer!
We have the opportunity to have a one-minute video uploaded to the CFC website, so that people can hear about us even outside of these virtual events. If you have some video skills, and can help us put together some video that we already have, a voice over that we'll write, and compliant captioning, we would absolutely love the help!

If you can help with either of these things, just reply to this newsletter.

Also, this month, we ask that if you are a federal employee, you list FFGW as a recipient in your agency’s CFC/United Way campaign:

 (CFC#26212; United Way #8911).
Is it Tuesday Already?
Featured Cats:  Sisters Monica & Tuesday

These two girls came to us after being left behind in a home when the owners moved.

They're a pair of sweet sisters that enjoy other cats, have no issues with dogs and enjoy kids too!

Their foster parents rave about them being such an easy going pair of girls who cause no issues at all.

These girls are fully vetted, spayed, shots updated and microchipped!

Please submit an application - or tell your friends about them today!

We try not to overflow your email inbox, and most months send just one Newsletter with a deep dive into all that's going on at FFGW, and some fun cat-centric stuff - but you can find out all the rescue happenings closer to real time on our social media!

Shop & Rescue!

You can shop and also help FFGW at the same time, by making your Amazon purchases through our "smile" link!

Use the button on the left for anything Amazon, select the Feline Foundation of Greater Washington as your designated charity. Your price doesn't change but a percentage of your purchase goes to FFGW!

In 2021 we received over $1000 through the Smile program, which donations were enough to provide 3-4 spays or 5-6 neuters - for an entire litter of kittens!

 Thank you!

I Feel Like Something Chewy!

Actually, not that chewy, but "Chewy"!

www.chewy.com is a pet product company specializing in home delivery of all things pet-related.
FFGW has a "wish list"  which you can find here:

Any products you select from our wish list will be delivered directly to us for use at our adoption center at PetSmart and by our fosters!

If you're new to Chewy, we'll even get a gift certificate for bringing in a new purchaser.
It's a great way to help us in our mission to help the kitties!

Thanks to everyone who has donated food, treats, litter, beds, toys...  Chewy's platform doesn't allow us to see the names of our generous donors, but please know that your support is very much appreciated!  And if you drop us a line and let us know when you donate something, we'll be more than happy to send our thanks!
