April Showers Bring... May Kittens

There is a storm brewing... and it brings a flood of kittens.

Kitten Pile

You may have seen that we have had kittens available throughout the winter - that is becoming more and more usual - and as temperatures warm further into spring, more and more kittens will be born and find their way to shelters and, if we are able to prepare for the storm, to FFGW.

Preparing a kitten for adoption  - deworming, flea treatment, health check/testing, microchipping, and spay/neuter - costs upward of $500, only about 1/3 of which is covered by our adoption fee.

And so, we rely on your donations to make up the difference between adoption fees and the actual cost of preparing a kitten for adoption - and as you can imagine for a litter of 5 or 6 kittens that difference becomes quite significant. If you would like to donate and specifically see your generosity go toward FFGW's kitten effort, you can donate to FFGW's Lucy Fund, which honors a special cat - and a couple of special volunteers - who mothered a lot of kittens. We'll tell you more about those folks, and that cat, next month as we celebrate Mother's Day, but it's never too early to help out a kitten in need!

No Room at the Inn?

Money to pay for the care of kittens is only part of what is needed for us to rescue. FFGW is primarily a foster-based rescue, and for us to rescue a cat or kitten, there has to be a temporary home where he or she can go.  Fostering is really rewarding and we'll show you all you need to know - you just provide food, litter and love!  The reason folks most often tell us that they can't foster? They're afraid they won't be able to let go. Come to one of our adoption events, see the joy on the faces of people bringing home a new kitty, and you'll see that letting go is easy when there's so much love to share.

Instead of "there's no room at the inn," please help FFGW say

"we'll leave the light on for you!"

You can find out lots more about fostering HERE!

If you're interested in fostering, fill out an application and we'll contact you and answer all your questions!

In Memoriam

Fosters are the heart and soul of any rescue organization, and they become our family. FFGW has lost a family member, Sheila Garcia, who lost her battle with cancer last week. Sheila was a skilled foster who excelled in helping shy cats to bloom and put their paws on the road to forever homes. Before joining FFGW, Sheila was a regular volunteer at weekly adoption events in Northern Virginia helping many hundreds of cats find adopters.

Sheila's family has said that in lieu of flowers donations can be made to FFGW. If you are so inclined, please indicate "Sheila" in the memorial field so that the family can be notified.

I Found a Bunch of Kittens!

As temperatures warm into spring, it's not unusual to stumble across a litter of feral kittens... what do you do? Of course, your first instinct might be to scoop up the kittens and get them to safety, but that may actually not be the best thing to happen!

To find out what to do, we consulted with Bernadette Kazmarski, a pet blogger and artist who has written an award-winning article on found kittens.

Bernadette writes a blog entitled The Creative Cat and sells her art through her website Portraits of Animals. Bernadette tells us, "The universal response to finding kittens is to presume they are abandoned and unable to care for themselves and to take them home, but not only is that rarely the right response, it’s not even the right presumption and can often be harmful to the kittens..."

Even if you don't see a mother cat, there may still be one nearby.

"The kitten decision game involves the approximate age of the kittens and the presence, or lack, of a mother cat, and the knowledge that kittens younger than eight weeks belong with their mother, even if she is feral."

"Kittens old enough to be spayed or neutered and too old to be socialized can be trapped with their mother, neutered and returned, but younger kittens, with or without their mother, present a lot of options, most of which involve fostering and sometimes a great amount of care.
Kittens can be socialized and adopted, even if their mother is feral, so they aren’t necessarily returned on the basis of their mother’s behavior."

Additionally, the best age to socialize kittens is 4 - 8 weeks, and leaving them with their mother where they were found also risks missing the window when the kittens can be socialized and not have to live out their lives as ferals. Of course, if the mother is friendly - and space available - the entire family can be rescued and fostered. If mom is not friendly, the decision is difficult.

"Kittens younger than eight weeks are best living with their mother even if she is feral, but do you leave them there knowing the mother will likely move them, and hope to find them when they are eight weeks and ready for surgeries, or do you somehow foster a feral mother while socializing her kittens?"

What to do with the clutch of kittens you just found behind the woodpile - a particularly hard decision, when they're very young and completely helpless?

The decision turns on a lot of factors, such as whether a mother is present, how safe is the location where the kittens are, the age of the kittens, and importantly - the availability of a foster who is able to house both kittens and a feral mom.  That's the best alternative - an experienced foster who can handle a mom who is not socialized to humans - but without that option... if the location is safe, and if you can monitor them in case the mom moves them... it's best to leave them with their mom - for now.

Bernadette gives us very detailed guidance - and you can read her whole article HERE.

So... when you come across that litter of kittens, resist that urge to immediately scoop them up, and think like a mom - do what's best for them even if that's hard!
