I used to ask people, at the start of a consultation, if the home where they grew up was functional or dysfunctional. Everyone said it was dysfunctional, even people who seemed to be very emotionally healthy.

So I changed my question to “on a scale of 1 to 10 with one being your family should be in the Jerry Springer show and 10 being your family is like the ideal families in the early days of TV, where does yours fit?

This gave me a much clearer picture of their original family situation. Then clients would tell me “it was a 2” or “it was a 7” instead of always telling me “dysfunctional.”
