You Do Need a Headboard

to Support Your Love

One time, I had shared in an online group an article I wrote about the importance of having a headboard for good Feng Shui.

A member of the group immediately commented that my article was bogus and showed I understood nothing of East Asian living. She claimed to know all about it because she had Japanese friends. She said, "they don't even have beds but roll out sleeping mats every night and put them away every morning."

Someone else chimed in "they don't even have bedrooms."

I patiently explained that Feng Shui is of Chinese origin, not Japanese, and that the traditional bed in ancient China didn't just have a headboard, but also a side board and a foot board. Beds had a ceiling and where only open on the right side. See for yourself:

Of course, these beds were alcoves inside of larger spaces and would have curtains to close them off for privacy.

Today, we don't need this much protection around the bed because we have rooms with walls and doors we can close. However, we still need headboards.

The very good reasons you need a headboard

There are very good practical and symbolic reasons why you need a headboard.

Here are some practical reasons.

A headboard...

  • Gives you a back rest when you sit up to read in bed.

  • Protects you from potential drafts behind the bed.

  • Prevents things from falling between the back of the bed and the wall.

And here are some symbolic reasons.

A headboard...

  • Unites the left and right side of the bed to symbolize the union of the couple.

  • Makes you feel you are doing well (and not struggling like when you got your first apartment or were in college).

  • Supports and protects you in your sleep.

I hope I have presented a good case to you for why you need a headboard. đź’–đź’–

But beware, some headboards are as bad or worse than not having a headboard at all.

That's why this week in the Feng Shui Dream Home Creation Lab, I'm giving participants feedback on the best position for the bed inside their master bedroom. We're also talking about headboards and art during our Thursday evening critiques.

If you join this program, I'll help you find the best position for your bed in your master bedroom during our weekly zoom meeting. I'll also give you feedback about your headboard and the art you keep above the headboard and on the wall across it.
