Leo Tolstoy, the famous Russian classic writer, had one of his character say in a book that,
"Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way."
In my over 20 years experience doing Feng Shui I have found this to be true. The homes of happy families all have things in common — they are all similar.
It’s the unhappy families (or adults who grew up in unhappy families) that seek unique ways of arranging their space. It is unhappy people who choose bizarre furniture, accessories, or art.
Nowhere is this more evident than in the family room. And no piece of furniture is more at the center of these differences than the sofa.
Of all my clients and students, those who have “sofa issues” are the ones that struggle the most with finding family happiness.
If you would like to learn how to choose a Feng-Shui-correct sofa watch the video lesson I recorded yesterday in my free Facebook group:

This week in the Feng Shui Dream Home Creation Lab we’re talking about where to place your sofas to create dream living spaces. If you would like to join or learn more, go here: https://feng-shui-for-us.teachable.com/p/feng-shui-dream-home-creation-lab
My family of origin was very unique in the way it manifested unhappiness, and it showed in the Feng Shui of my parents’ home, where everything was as it shouldn’t be. I have shared some of these family stories, as well as the much better Feng Shui and the greater happiness in my grandmother’s home in my book Room by Room, Feng Shui Secrets for a Happy Life.
In my parents’ home the living room had not a single solid wall, so the sofa had to be put against a very large, very cold window. In my grandmother's home there was a solid wall with a beautiful painting behind the sofa.
The good news is that no matter how bad the Feng Shui was in your home growing up, the guidelines to create an environment that promotes happiness for all families are very easy to learn and apply.
