In this week's newsletter we are going to show YOU why laying to level stakes is risky, when not setting a maximum odds limit. 

Let's face it, this is the approach most inexperienced layers start out with. Very quickly they find themselves chasing losses. Unlike backing horses, YOU need to be much more savvy with your staking.

Bearing this in mind, let's compare laying to level stakes with the liability reduction plan we advise our members to use.

Exactly the same as the back level staking plan. This is where you place your lay bets to a fixed stake. For instance, no matter what the odds are the stake will always be a percentage of your start bank. 

For example: 

• Selection 1. GOOD BOY - is laid @ 7.00, for £5. Liability = £30 E.G 6x stake
  
• Selection 2. FOXDEN - is laid @ 5.00, for £5. Liability = £20 E.G 4x stake
  
• Selection 3. KINGDOM FOR GOLD - is laid @ 4.00, for £5. Liability = £15 E.G 3x stake

• If selection 1 wins, you lose £30, and are left chasing losses for the day.
  
• If selections 2 and 3 lose, you're still £20 down less the exchanges commission.
  
• If selection 2 wins, but 1 and 3 lose, your only £10 down less commission
  
• If selection 3 wins, but 1 and 2 lose, your only £5 down less commission
  

To get around this constant problem when laying horses you need to protect your stake. There are several ways you can do this. A really simple lay staking plan, often overlooked by majority of punters is - the liability reduction plan. 

The aim is to even the odds out, to a more manageable level. In this example we use 4.00 as the benchmark.

• Selection 1. GOOD BOY - is laid @ 4.60, for £5. Liability= £18 E.G 3.6x stake
  
• Selection 2. FOXDEN - is laid @ 4.3, for £5. Liability= £16.50 E.G 3.3x stake
  
• Selection 3. KINGDOM FOR GOLD - is laid @ 4.00, for £5. Liability= £15 E.G 3x stake
  

How do you do this you may be wondering?

Well, VALUE is they key word here!

Betting exchanges are all about price movement. There are traders, backers, layers, and punters using bots to etch out a profit.

Bearing this in mind, don't be afraid to ask for a better price than is currently available. Often, this will mean placing bets in-play. After all we are betting on racing, which means some horses odds will decrease, whilst others will increase. 

So next time you identify a suitable lay selection, but it's odds are too high; ask for lower odds in-play. 

Just remember, when submitting your bet into the market click the “keep” bet in-play radio button on your Betfair betting slip. If you don't your bet will be cancelled before the off!
