Casting Aspersions – Toni M. Babcock

“But you, why do you judge your brother or sister? Or you, why do you despise your brother or sister? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God. For it is written, ‘As I live, says the Lord, every knee will bow to me, and every tongue will give praise to God.’ So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.” (Rom 14:10-12 CSB)

Let’s talk about roadblocks when we judge the testimony of another traveler on the King’s highway, since none of us knows just how the Spirit of God might be at work.

First, the Holy Spirit does not operate like humans do in the flesh. Jesus said to Nicodemus, “The wind blows where it pleases, and you hear its sound, but you don’t know where is comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” (John 3:8 CSB).

I’m convinced if we would simply learn to recognize the work of the Holy Spirit — how He wills to move and influence others, we would cease from caving into the temptation to frame Him in our own image. We should spend more time evaluating our own progress, our own intentions, and our own shortfalls in the Christian life, so there’d be little time to spend examining the progress, motives, and intentions of others.

The key is never to be a roadblock (cf. Romans 14:13 CSB). Consider how it might actually work to suppress the work of the Spirit in another’s life when we don’t in faith acknowledge what God appears to be doing, by openly casting doubt; calling their testimony “spotty”, or suspecting it doesn’t check off a list of expectations like we think it should. I’m sure glad Priscilla and Aquila didn’t treat Apollos like that! (cf. Acts 18:24-28 CSB). Instead, let’s welcome what God is doing in His own time and way in people’s lives – and not be quick to judge.

2024 Best of the Best Winner Interview: Marian Holbrook

Shari: Mariane, congratulations on your well-deserved win for your entry for the topic Jesus, The Strongest Word Man Ever Heard. I’m glad you finally were able to find out that you won! You were probably the last to know. What was your first thought when you found out you had won?

Mariane: I was surprised because I'd forgotten that the B.O.B. winner was chosen in July and I hadn't received a notice from FaithWriters. (Actually, you had sent me an Email immediately after my story had been selected for first place but my computer was being repaired that day and I didn't receive the Email.) When my FB friend, Verna Mitchell, wrote to congratulate me, I insisted that it was a joke and I forgot about it. When I finally realized it was indeed a win, I was ecstatic and after thanking Shari, the first person I contacted was Verna.

Shari: I was so relieved to finally hear from you. I had even reached out to a relative of yours on FaceBook, who I saw had some FW mutual friends. I was getting a bit worried. I'm so glad it was just a computer issue! How does it feel to be a two-time Best of the Best Winner? You also placed first in 2019 for Come and Dine (Feast Challenge).

Mariane: I didn't know anyone could win the B.O.B. a second time so that made the win even more precious. My husband and two sons were so proud of their 90-year-old mom and we celebrated together over the weekend. They've always been my best cheerleaders and encouragers. They were even more excited than they were five years ago when I was the B.O.B, winner.

Shari: I would normally ask a writer where they came up with the idea for their story, but since your entry was non-fiction, it’s pretty obvious where you got your inspiration. I was blown away reading it. God did an amazing thing in your life when you called on the name of Jesus. Were there any details you had to leave out due to the word count?

Mariane: I toned down the amount of fear I felt when the man tried to molest me. I couldn't provide more details but I was beyond being terrified. When no other passengers came to my aid, I felt so alone and away from home as I was. Of course, I didn't realize my thin, frightened voice could not be heard above the noise of the passenger trains in 1948. I'm sure today's trains are more passenger-friendly and free from squeaking wheels, screeching brakes and ear-splitting whistles. When I finally found my voice, the other passengers responded immediately, displaying heartfelt concern for a small, very frightened teenager.

Shari: How/when did you first start writing? What is your favorite genre to write?

Mariane: I love to write self-deprecating humor and situational humor. I began writing poetry in sixth grade when our English teacher became very ill and was replaced by a very handsome, newly-discharged Navy captain, Mr. Burke. Every girl in middle school fell immediately in love with this Adonis. I wrote a typical 11-year-old girl's love poem about Mr. Burke. It was full of kisses and hugs and details about our life together through some unforeseen circumstances. The boy seated behind me read it over my shoulder and quickly reached for it, silently laughing. Mr. Burke watched him, then invited him to share with the class whatever this boy was reading. When Mr. Burke was identified as the subject of the poem, he quickly confiscated the poem and stuffed it into his desk door and escorted the unrepentant boy to the principal's office.

Shari: You have been a faithful member of FaithWriters since 2007! Do you have a favorite piece or two you have written for FaithWriters?

Mariane: Two stories could be my favorites and the most requested: "Gabriel, Stop Blowing That Horn" and "The Unorthodox Baptism of Miss Juney Orr." Humor is the most difficult genre for writers. What make some people laugh makes others yawn with boredom.

Shari: I have always loved your humorous entries. They truly lift the spirts of your readers while giving a little bit of truth, too. Which authors have been your writing inspirations?

Mariane: Some of my favorite Christian authors are:

Josh McDowell, John Piper, Lee Strobel (The Case for Christ and other titles in "The Case For" series), Elisabeth Elliot
C.S. Lewis, Louie Giglio, Ann Graham Lotz, A.W. Tozer, and A.B. Simpson.

Secular writers I enjoy are:

John Grisham, Larry McMurtry, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Dave Barry, Louis L'Amour, Kate Bowler, Lisa Wingate and more.

I love mysteries, biographies, courtroom drama, historical fiction, nonfiction books about World Wars 1 and 2 and the Civil War, books about the founders of our country, courageous missionary stories, Christian humor. And of course, the Bible.

Shari: How did you find FaithWriters? How has it helped in your writing journey?

Mariane: I have been in poor health since I was the victim of a head-on collision in the mid-1970s when my spine and hips were injured. One day in 2007 I wrote a poem titled "Shelf Life" in which I prayed that God would give me something meaningful to do since I was no longer able to teach school. While surfing the internet a few days later, I stumbled (or rather, I was led) onto the FaithWriters' link and felt instantly drawn to this group. It has been a life-changing experience. I found myself accountable to others, encouraged, prompted, critiqued, and soon became friends with godly, disciplined writers who I'd needed for my spiritual and physical growth.

Shari: So, I’d like to get to know you a bit better, as I’m sure would our members. Tell us a little about yourself and your family.

Mariane: I married my college sweetheart in 1955 and although I grew up in New York State, we moved to North Carolina after graduation to help care for John's parents. Soon we both were employed as teachers in the public school system. We've raised two fine sons, both of whom are committed Christians who have owned their own businesses. We have three grandchildren and three step-grandchildren, all of whom live in North Carolina.

Shari: What advice would you give to our other FaithWriters members?

Mariane: In the words of coach Jimmy Valvano of NC State University, "Never give up! Don't you EVER give up!" He passionately shouted these words in 1993 at an ESPY awards banquet in his honor as a victim of cancer, forever cementing him in the love and admiration of his fans. I would encourage every active member to keep writing, keep reading, and never give up. I would invite those who are no longer active to try again, to contact the lovely, engaging co-owner, Bea Edwards, and become her next best friend. Many need this outlet, this writing exercise, perhaps as much as I did in 2007 and still do.

Shari: Thank you for your time in letting us get a little peek into your life and writing. Congratulations once again. I look forward to reading more of your work in the future!

This quarter we had a very unique situation. Lynae Fisher is fairly new to the site and she is obviously a very talented writer. She started in intermediate and progressed by the rules all the way to master's this last quarter. While this has happened before, it is far from usual. Lynae took top place in intermediate and master's for the quarter and she is 18 years old. We believe God has big plans for her. She has also read and reviewed several of our Free Reads for Reviews books for other members. Lois Eaton is also fairly new to the site and has progressed quickly too. She has submitted several devotionals that have been used for FaithWriters main site devotional. Congratulations to both of our winners.

Previous Challenge Entry (Level 4 – Masters)
Topic: Protector (05/16/24)
TITLE: King Firework | Previous Challenge Entry
By Lynae Fisher

Tiny and delicate, yet strong and courageous; sweet and gentle, yet fierce and formidable: such was the mighty King Firework the Courageous, king of the Chickingdom. King Firework, a Single-combed Brown Leghorn rooster, loved his hens dearly. During his reign, no one dared trouble them— including the King Gandalf, the Americana rooster who was twice his size.

Gandalf was not such a gentleman like Firework. That fellow coveted one of Firework’s tiny ladies and tried to take her for his own. Poor little hen, she cried out as he chased her down and grabbed her by the neck. Shooting onto the scene, Firework stood between them and gave the offender a stern talking to. The sweet king preferred peace whenever it could be had.

But the wicked Gandalf did not heed his words; he wanted little Zippy for his own. Another day, he pounced on her. This time, Firework, shot over the six-foot fence, exploding like his namesake onto the scene to fight for his lady’s honor. Claws and spurs striking, beak darting, winging flapping, he tackled the larger king. On and on they fought. Gandalf with his larger size and strength beat back at his little brother. Being smaller and the better flier, Firework remained the top cock as he pounded the enemy over and over. No one would mess with his lady and get away with it.

At last, the cowardly Gandalf decided it was not worth the fight and slunk away in shame. King Firework, though standing proudly for his lady, paid a price for his courage. Torn in the fight, his pearl-white right ear lobe and ruby-red waddles were bleeding; a meager sacrifice for the protection of his beloved hen. Once assured that the cowardly attacker was gone, he strutted away to join the rest of his hens and rest his elegant wings and feet.

Having worn out his welcome, Gandalf ceased to reign in the Chickingdom, but danger did not leave with him. The beautiful blemished king continued to guard his cherished hens with gentleness and elegance on one side and fierceness and terror on the other. Ever standing in the gap between danger and his hens was he.

One day, while Firework was diligently watching the sky, he noticed something was off. The birds were silent. The air was stiff with the scent of danger. Firework scoured the sky and trees. A hawk appeared in the sky. It swooped down. This was a small, agile hawk capable of quick motion. Firework’s eyes flashed like fire. Who was this pest to venture so near to his hens? With his hens safely behind him, Firework advanced towards the invader. The hawk flitted above him, paying him no attention. It had its eye on another tasty morsel. While the hawk danced above him, the rooster paced below, looking for a way to attack. Thwarted in its efforts, the hawk fled from the land. Firework’s hens were safe once more. Of all the renowned kings of Chickingdom, King Firework the Courageous was no doubt the greatest protector the hens ever had.

Though King Firework’s reign eventually came to an end, we have an eternal King whom not even death itself could defeat. He will never leave us nor forsake us. Unlike little King Firework, our King is omnipresent and omnipotent. Our King of kings and Lord of lords laid down His life for His bride and rose again to save us from the world and the prince thereof.

John 15:13(KJV) “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

Sharing Jesus Without Fear

Copy, print and study this for use. Your friends and family deserve to hear the good news in a reasonable
way. You would even fashion the following in a letter and mail it out to them. The verses can be changed if you
prefer others. Please, you cannot continue to ignore God's call to share the gospel with the lost.

The steps to share your faith without fear – no confrontation. Pray and then get them alone.

1. Ask these five questions to help discover their personal spiritual condition.

• Do you have any kind of spiritual belief?
• To you, who is Jesus?
• Do you think there is a heaven and a hell?
• If you died right now, where would you go?
• If what you believe were not true, would you want to know it?

Listen to their answers in a calm and open way. Do not reply to their statements. If their answers are incorrect, you will be asking their permission to share the truth in Christ with the last question. If they say no to the fifth question, you can drop it – no confrontation. But if they want to hear, go to step two and then three.

2. Here are a series of five Bible verses to ask the lost person to read aloud. Let them read them and remain silent. After each verse they read, ask them what it says to them. If they misunderstand, ask them to read it again until they admit the truth in the verse.

• for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Romans 3:23 ESV

• For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23 ESV
• Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3 ESV
• Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6 ESV
• if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with your heart you believe and are justified, and with your mouth you confess and are saved.… Romans 10:9-10 BSB

3. Then ask them a series of five questions that summarizes the truth of the verses and lead the lost person to the point of decision.

• Are you a sinner?
• Do you want forgiveness for your sins?
• Do you believe Jesus died on the cross for you and rose again?
• Are you willing to surrender yourself to Christ?
• Are you ready to invite Jesus into your heart and into your life?

4. Lead them in the Sinner's Prayer if they are ready to make a decision. Stay in touch and get them discipled or connect them with a local fellowship or small group for future growth.

“I’d like to thank you for producing the million-dollar tracts. Because of it, I got saved and I gave my life to Jesus Christ 8 years ago. I used to be an atheist and God brought me to my knees through your million-dollar tract. I went from being an atheist to being on staff at a church, and now I evangelize regularly.” Peter G.

But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matt 6:20 - 21 NIV

Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. Luke 12:33 NIV

You can do this for Jesus!

Please bless us by letting us know if you have gotten involved in any of the options.
Increase Sales With an Audio Book
                          or
Make a Nice Income From Home

Recently, I had an email exchange with Dave Walker, a longtime FaithWriters member who grew tremendously in the Writing Challenge. Dave's book, God in the ICU, has done extremely well with almost 2,700 Amazon reviews the last time I looked. He was happily surprised to see a significant increase in sales due to the addition of an audio version. You can view Dave's book and listen to a small audio portion HERE. Dave's book was perfect for an audiobook.

Dave did his own narration, and for some, that works great. But there is an easier way, and it is not that expensive. You can learn about it HERE. ACX is an Amazon company, on their site you can place your book up for narrator auditions. You then get offers from narrators who read a sample for you, posting it on ACX. You choose the one you like and make a deal. This is all done online.

I recently had an audiobook done of Gravity on ACX, by a great narrator and believer named R.F. McCoy. You can hear a sample HERE. If you like R.F. McCoy's voice, make sure to request an audition from him. He was professional, diligent and on schedule. You can find his profile on ACX. It costs nothing to request auditions and you will probably get several. I paid Bob $500.00 and get to keep any profits for myself after Amazon's cut. You can also offer to split profits and pay nothing if a narrator agrees.

When your narration is complete and you have paid the bill, your book is automatically loaded for sale on Audible and other outlets. Everything is professional and that's what you want for your audiobook.

Another thought for some readers is to apply to be a narrator.
ACX will show you how to do this on their site. If you have a good voice, you could make a nice income from home.

Support FaithWriters Spread of the Gospel

Fishers of Men in Over 230 Countries
Together We Spread the Gospel On the Net

Not all of us can go around the world as missionaries in person, but we can reach the world online. We can even reach many places missionaries cannot go in person. The world needs sites like FaithWriters, prepared Christian authors and as many Christian articles and books that point to Jesus as possible. The web especially needs your Bible studies, apologetic articles, calls to salvation, nonfiction and fiction articles and books leading people to Jesus. Together we attract lost people from all over the world who need Jesus along with believers who need their minds renewed and encouraged. God has given us a great opportunity to reach many people who may have never heard of Jesus. The image above marks the location of our visitors.

Numerous people from around the world have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior directly through FaithWriters. We contact every person who leaves an email address and provide them with more information. Sometimes we correspond with them several times. We even offer to place them in contact with another believer (FaithWriters member) in their country. Consider how much time people --- especially kids --- spend on the internet these days. Watch this two-minute video from Kimberly on how she found God on the internet

A few unedited emails from people who have accepted Jesus on the site.

1) This first one was from a person who hacked FaithWriters a few years ago. We feared the entire site might be lost. We prayed for our hackers and posted articles letting them know that their salvation was more important than the website. The shutdown of the site stopped and we received this message through our evangelism page. I am certain is was our hacker.

Do This Today!

Do You Always Keep a Copy of Your Articles?
We STRONGLY recommend you do this today and occasionally in the future as you add more articles

We appreciated your patience when FaithWriters was down for over two days a few months ago, due to issues with our service provider. The issue we experienced makes this message of even more importance. We do not want you to lose your articles. Therefore, we have been pushing this for over a year and hope you have already taken advantage of it.  You can download a copy of your articles in mass, with one click on the site. If you post regularly, go back and do this once a month or so to capture your newest submissions.

We back up the site regularly but cannot give you a 100% guarantee of their permanent safety. Things happen online as you know. Hackers are a big issue and some out there would like to take a Christian site down. We have had attacks and issues in the past. Thankfully, we do not keep any of your financial information.

If you log into the site and look in the middle left column of the My Account page under Update and Manage Your Profile/Account, you will see the following link on the website: Click Here to Download a Copy of Your Articles in Mass

When you are logged into the site, click on that link on the website and a copy of your articles will be downloaded to your computer in a zip file. It will be fairly quick depending on your internet speed and number of articles. Save them to your computer or a thumb drive.
While this should download all of your articles, sometimes a couple are missed for some unknown reason. Therefore, double check the downloaded articles by opening each one on your computer. If an important one is missed, you will need to manually copy it to your records from the site. Then going forward, make sure to keep a copy of each new article you post.

KEEP COPIES OF YOUR ARTICLES! Make sure to do this today to protect your writing. Log in HERE.

We can learn and improve our own writing by reading the winners.
While you are there, sow some good seed by leaving a comment.

Noel Mitaxa is an Aussie storyteller. He has syndicated his weekly Good News column in Australian secular newspapers for over twenty years; a syndication that's recently expanded into Australia's armed services and to the USA and the UK.

His insights come from decades of working with people: as an employment counsellor; then as a pastor and a chaplain in industry and sports; and from living up close as a husband, father and grandfather.

Noel loves words: as powerful tools and as playful toys. He has edited a Christian sports magazine, promotional brochures, television testimony spots, children's books and pastoral care books. Most recently he assisted Christian coaches with a soccer manual that links discipleship pointers with game strategies-as a bridge to reaching young sportspeople in the developing world.

Having loved the stimulation of belonging to the FaithWriters family since early 2009, Noel is keen to assist colleagues wanting to reach secular readers with credibility and relevance.

Another Great Way to Improve The Critique Circle

Fellow Members Need Your Help.

Providing comments and critiques for fellow members is of great encouragement to them. It is also the perfect way to improve your writing skill.

Tips on Giving Critiques

Critiquing the work of others requires balance. Being too nice will not help your fellow writers develop their work; being too harsh can crush a writer’s ego (particularly new writers, who tend to be shy about sharing their work). How can you achieve the right balance? Here are some tips:

Take care to point out both what works, and what doesn’t. If you’re new to critiquing, a good hint would be to point out one thing you like (a phrase, a description, an idea) for each thing that bothered you.

Whenever possible, be specific when pointing out things that you didn’t like (don’t just say “I didn’t like this part” or “I’d cut that,” say “I didn’t like this part because…” or “I’d cut that because…”).

Try to offer suggestions when you think a change is needed. Suggestions, even to the point of an offered rewording, can be very helpful; even if the suggestion isn’t exactly right for the author to use, he or she may get a good idea from it, or at least a better understanding of the point you are trying to make.

Be honest and direct, but in a polite and caring way. Holding back your feelings about a piece because you’re afraid to share your thoughts isn’t going to help anyone. Just be mindful of how you share your opinions!

We Also Need Your Article to Critique!
Members and paid editors provide the critiques in the circle. You can even submit your judged Challenge entries to the circle.

"I have a few, very few, trusted friends who will edit me with a scowl. Most people want you to feel good so they give you compliments about your writing, and these don’t help at all (except emotionally). Really, you need some grouches to edit your work." Philip Yancey in a FaithWriters interview.

This is a real chance to help others and receive some very constructive and private critiques of your writing.

We Always Respond to Emails

If you do not receive a timely response to an email, we did not receive your email, or you did not receive our reply. We are constantly battling overwhelming amounts of spam and sometimes emails we should receive end up in our spam by accident.

You should check your spam and make sure that writer-support@faithwriters.com, feedback@faithwriters.com, bea@faithwriters.com and michael@faithwriters.com are on your email providers approved list.

If you have tried more than once and did not receive a reply, click on a contact link at the bottom of most FaithWriters pages and send us a message telling us of the issue. We will try and email you from another email provider.

Article Comment Emails Not Getting to Your Gmail?

In the past, some members have had issues receiving notification emails when their Challenge or other articles receive a comment. We just did a test of the system and placed a Gmail test address in my profile. I then posted a comment on one of my articles. I also did this test on a Challenge article for a member who said she was not getting the emails. In both tests, the email notification of the comment did come through to the Gmail address, but in both cases, it went to the junk file in Gmail. So, FaithWriters automatic email system is working to Gmail but may be going to your junk.

If you have not been receiving notifications of comments on your articles, post a test comment on one of your own articles and then check the junk tab on your Gmail. Be aware, my junk tab in Gmail showed there were no junk emails until I clicked on it and found the comment notification email from FaithWriters in there.  If you find any emails from FaithWriters in your junk, move them to your inbox and hopefully next time they will not go to junk. Make sure to check your junk on a regular basis and click on the other tabs just to check. Each time move them to your inbox. There is also a tab titled "view all email" that should be checked. Sometimes Gmail divides email up into different tabs, so check all the tabs once in a while just in case. This is something you should check if you have Hotmail or others too.
