Thank you to everyone for your patience during our website issues. We had to change to a new server due to issues and right after that was finished, we experienced a large denial of service (DDoS) bot attack on the site. Things are looking good now, but there may be some small issues remaining. If you have issues, please email us the specific details.

A Big Change to the FaithWriters’ Challenge Level Criteria

After my recent announcement for members who were to move up based on placement, I heard from Mike (the owner of FW) that some people felt they weren’t really ready to move up. Mike and I discussed it for a bit, and I prayed about it.

I suggested that all movement to a new level be based on Editor's Choice (Top Ten) placements ONLY, not placing first twice in your level for Beginner/Intermediates. He agreed. This will allow people time to grow more in their writing ability and confidence before being jumped up a level.

So, from now on, you will only be expected to move up if you have placed three times in the EC while in Beginner/Intermediate to Advanced, and then three more times to go from Advanced to Masters. If you have 6 total placements in the EC from ANY LEVEL (i.e. if you began in Advanced), please enter in Masters. You’ve earned it!

If you were recently asked to move up and do not have the required EC placements, please feel free to drop back a level, UNLESS you have 6 total ECs from any level, then please stay in Masters.

NOTE - If you've already entered this challenge in a new level but want to drop back down, shoot us a message/email and we'll move your entry before the topic closes.

God bless and keep writing!

New For Writing Challenge - Let's Make Something Old New Again
This quarter on the weekly challenge entries, we are going to make something old, new again. Many people have mentioned how discouraging it is to not receive many or any comments on their submissions. Back in the day, we used to have a spot on the forums where if we wanted more feedback on the challenge articles before the winners were announced, we could give hints that led to our article. I'm going to post a section on Faithwriters group on Facebook on the Monday before the winners are announced called Drop a Hint! In the comment section on Facebook, you'll be able to give some clues about your entry. For example, say I entered an article entitled, The Tears Never Stop, I might give a hint like this: Go to Level 4 and look for a story about the liquid that flows from your eyes endlessly. Then others can go look for something that matches that title and read it and leave a comment.
Not only will this encourage the author, but it will help the people who read and leave comments by giving them insight into what works or doesn't work for that person. Early on in my FW journey, I read an article that ended with a mysterious stranger who turned out to be an angel. I realized I was disappointed in that cliché-type ending. I was surprised that I had used that exact tool in my own writing. Reading and commenting helped me spot that, change my own writing, and the new ending was even better.
Another example was someone pointed out the difference between compliment/complement. I never knew there were differences, and then I started pointing out that same thing in my comments. It helped others and made me more diligent about checking meanings of words in my own writing, which is why I tend to get hung up on nauseous vs nauseated.
So if you enter the weekly challenge and want to encourage others and help yourself become a stronger writer, come to the FaithWriters group on Facebook on the Monday after the challenge entries are made public and drop us a hint about your title. The only thing we ask is if you do this, that you make an effort to comment on other entries. I know some are nervous about leaving constructive critiques. A great way to do this is the sandwich method. Start and end with something you liked about the entry and put a constructive bit in the middle. However, if you aren't comfortable leaving constructive (or what some call critical) feedback, just leave a line or two about what you did like. The more you read, the easier it will become to leave comments, and you'll not only encourage others, but you might even learn something about your own way of crafting.
If you aren't familiar with the FaithWriters group (not the page) on Facebook, please come check us out. We have over 750 members now, but there's always room for more. It's a great space to chat with other members, receive encouragement, learn writing/publishing tips, find out what's going on in Faithwriters, and have fun. You have to answer a few questions to join. Don't forget to check the box saying you agree to follow all rules.
We hope to see you there and hope the Drop a Hint post will encourage others to read and comment on the weekly challenge.

The One Thing Needful – Toni M. Babcock

“What is impossible with man is possible with God.” (Luke 18:27 CSB)

A rich young ruler came to Jesus one day asking what he could do to inherit eternal life.

“You know the commandments – Do not commit adultery; do not murder; do not steal; do not bear false witness; honor your father and your mother,” Jesus replied (cf. Luke 18:20 CSB).

Note how Jesus addressed the man’s conscience; “You know the commandments…”   He did not say however, ‘keep them as a means of purchasing your entrance into heaven.’  But apparently this is the conclusion the young man made.

“I have kept all these from my youth,” he told Jesus.  He was confident he measured up to the standard Jesus referred to, and appeared stumped as to what more he could do.

“You still lack one thing.  Sell all you have, and distribute it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me,” Jesus told him.

Jesus skillfully used an example of total surrender he knew the young ruler lacked in order to strip away his self-confidence in the flesh.

After the man heard this, he became extremely sad, because he was very rich. (cf. Luke 18:21-23 CSB).  Christ’s word had the desired effect.

Notice what made the young man sorrowful.  He was sorrowful about the thought of having to leave his riches, but not about the bondage of being chained to them. He was sorrowful over the personal cost of following Jesus, but not about his lack of willingness to do what Jesus asked.

The bottom line was, he lacked the one thing needful – not another moral obligation to fulfill so he could inherit eternal life on his own – but saving faith.  A faith that issued from a new heart; a heart transformed to do God’s will whatever the cost through the power of Jesus Christ.

Sharing Jesus Without Fear

Copy, print and study this for use. Your friends and family deserve to hear the good news in a reasonable
way. You would even fashion the following in a letter and mail it out to them. The verses can be changed if you
prefer others. Please, you cannot continue to ignore God's call to share the gospel with the lost.

The steps to share your faith without fear – no confrontation. Pray and then get them alone.

1. Ask these five questions to help discover their personal spiritual condition.

• Do you have any kind of spiritual belief?
• To you, who is Jesus?
• Do you think there is a heaven and a hell?
• If you died right now, where would you go?
• If what you believe were not true, would you want to know it?

Listen to their answers in a calm and open way. Do not reply to their statements. If their answers are incorrect, you will be asking their permission to share the truth in Christ with the last question. If they say no to the fifth question, you can drop it – no confrontation. But if they want to hear, go to step two and then three.

2. Here are a series of five Bible verses to ask the lost person to read aloud. Let them read them and remain silent. After each verse they read, ask them what it says to them. If they misunderstand, ask them to read it again until they admit the truth in the verse.

• for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Romans 3:23 ESV

• For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23 ESV
• Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3 ESV
• Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6 ESV
• if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with your heart you believe and are justified, and with your mouth you confess and are saved.… Romans 10:9-10 BSB

3. Then ask them a series of five questions that summarizes the truth of the verses and lead the lost person to the point of decision.

• Are you a sinner?
• Do you want forgiveness for your sins?
• Do you believe Jesus died on the cross for you and rose again?
• Are you willing to surrender yourself to Christ?
• Are you ready to invite Jesus into your heart and into your life?

4. Lead them in the Sinner's Prayer if they are ready to make a decision. Stay in touch and get them discipled or connect them with a local fellowship or small group for future growth.

Previous Challenge Entry (Level 4 – Masters)
Topic: BRUNCH (02/27/25)

  • TITLE: A Few Sticks | Previous Challenge Entry
    By Jack Taylor
    03/05/25
  •

The horizon burned with fiery fury as the sun escaped its overnight chambers. A blur of crimson scalded the hills as dawn imitated the lava flow of an erupting volcano. The hooded figure scraped vainly at the dry creek bed for a handful of moisture to wet his tongue. He scanned the heavens with empty eyes for the winged friends who had provided his daily sustenance. It was time to move on.

“My life is in your hands,” he said.

The whisper in the wind tugged him away from his shelter. It tugged him across the burning sands and empty wastelands, his empty belly gurgling its protest. Without sustenance. Without refreshment. A thousand, ten-thousand, one-hundred-thousand stumbling steps of desperation to the land of unbelievers. To the gate of a widow preparing her last brunch. A widow grasping a few sticks.

“Please! Water!” he gasped. “And bread.”

She wasn’t much more than a bag of bones with a handful of sticks to feed her fire. Her eyes measured the newcomer’s wilting frame. “As surely as your God lives-I don’t have bread. Just a handful of flour and some olive oil. It’s the last brunch for my son and I before we die.”

The aging prophet stretched himself. “Don’t be afraid. Go make your brunch, but first, make something for me. The God of Israel says you’ll never run out of flour or oil until the rains return.”

The God of Israel? Who is He in this land outside the land? What did such a Sovereign care for those who were perishing? Still, hadn’t she heard the whispers in her night? Hadn’t she expected this stranger to appear?

With little hesitation, she left him, to prepare the brunch. Thoughts swirled through her mind like wind-swept tumbleweeds. So, the whispers in the night hadn’t been delirious hallucinations. The strange deity who had seen Hagar and Ishmael in the stories of long ago still saw the lonely outcast and cared. But why did he have to wait until the last mouthful to provide for the empty belly of a child?

Every day, the fiery horizon rose to burn the land. In thousands of homes, the flour ran out and the oil failed to flow. And yet, in one home, the God who is enough, provided enough.

Every brunch was another step of faith. The Great God had provided for this meal but if she used it all up for this meal, would there truly be something left for tomorrow? To feed the prophet first and to trust that there would still be enough was a stretching moment for her soul every single day.

Morning after morning, brunch after brunch, until all became routine, the three shared their meager meal. There was never too much and never too little. The clouds never showed and the pot never emptied. As long as a little faith emerged, the flour and oil emerged with it.

Then one morning as she prepared the last brunch, since every brunch was the last, her son failed to come at her call. His health faltered, his breath dwindled, his eyes dimmed. Finally, there was only stillness.

“Why?” she called out. “Why did you come to me? To remind me of my sin and kill my son?” Can a woman never run away from her past? Must it always haunt her?

Elijah scooped up the frail body and scampered up the outside stairs to the prayer room on the roof. The anguished cries of one who had known emptiness flowed through limb, and body, though soul, and heart, through mind and spirit. “Lord! Why this tragedy on this widow and her son?”

He stretched himself out on the boy. “Lord, let this boy’s life return to him.”

The God who is enough gave enough life back to the boy. He stirred, groaned, gasped. The prophet returned the son back to his mother. “He’s alive.”

Faith and life had flowed like flour and oil. Something deeper and wider was being called on now. “Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the LORD from your mouth is the truth.”

A single brunch had called for faith from an old prophet and from a widow who had all but been forgotten. Every brunch after pulled them deeper into faith and into routine. Just like fresh oil and fresh flour the God who is enough calls for fresh faith and fresh life from us.

I used to be an atheist and God brought me to my knees through your million-dollar tract. I went from being an atheist to being on staff at a church, and now I evangelize regularly.” Peter G.

Increase Sales With an Audio Book
                          or
Make a Nice Income From Home

Recently, I had an email exchange with Dave Walker, a longtime FaithWriters member who grew tremendously in the Writing Challenge. Dave's book, God in the ICU, has done extremely well with almost 2,700 Amazon reviews the last time I looked. He was happily surprised to see a significant increase in sales due to the addition of an audio version. You can view Dave's book and listen to a small audio portion HERE. Dave's book was perfect for an audiobook.

Dave did his own narration, and for some, that works great. But there is an easier way, and it is not that expensive. You can learn about it HERE. ACX is an Amazon company, on their site you can place your book up for narrator auditions. You then get offers from narrators who read a sample for you, posting it on ACX. You choose the one you like and make a deal. This is all done online.

I recently had an audiobook done of Gravity on ACX, by a great narrator and believer named R.F. McCoy. You can hear a sample HERE. If you like R.F. McCoy's voice, make sure to request an audition from him. He was professional, diligent and on schedule. You can find his profile on ACX. It costs nothing to request auditions and you will probably get several. I paid Bob $500.00 and get to keep any profits for myself after Amazon's cut. You can also offer to split profits and pay nothing if a narrator agrees.

When your narration is complete and you have paid the bill, your book is automatically loaded for sale on Audible and other outlets. Everything is professional and that's what you want for your audiobook.

Another thought for some readers is to apply to be a narrator.
ACX will show you how to do this on their site. If you have a good voice, you could make a nice income from home.
Please let us know if you have signed up for this program.

Sometimes we correspond with them several times. We even offer to place them in contact with another believer (FaithWriters member) in their country. Consider how much time people --- especially kids --- spend on the internet these days. Watch this two-minute video from Kimberly on how she found God on the internet

A few unedited emails from people who have accepted Jesus on the site.

1) This first one was from a person who hacked FaithWriters a few years ago. We feared the entire site might be lost. We prayed for our hackers and posted articles letting them know that their salvation was more important than the website. The shutdown of the site stopped and we received this message through our evangelism page. I am certain is was our hacker.

Do This Today!

Do You Always Keep a Copy of Your Articles?
We STRONGLY recommend you do this today and occasionally in the future as you add more articles

We appreciated your patience when FaithWriters was down for over two days a few months ago, due to issues with our service provider. The issue we experienced makes this message of even more importance. We do not want you to lose your articles. Therefore, we have been pushing this for over a year and hope you have already taken advantage of it.  You can download a copy of your articles in mass, with one click on the site. If you post regularly, go back and do this once a month or so to capture your newest submissions.

We back up the site regularly but cannot give you a 100% guarantee of their permanent safety. Things happen online as you know. Hackers are a big issue and some out there would like to take a Christian site down. We have had attacks and issues in the past. Thankfully, we do not keep any of your financial information.

If you log into the site and look in the middle left column of the My Account page under Update and Manage Your Profile/Account, you will see the following link on the website: Click Here to Download a Copy of Your Articles in Mass

When you are logged into the site, click on that link on the website and a copy of your articles will be downloaded to your computer in a zip file. It will be fairly quick depending on your internet speed and number of articles. Save them to your computer or a thumb drive.
While this should download all of your articles, sometimes a couple are missed for some unknown reason. Therefore, double check the downloaded articles by opening each one on your computer. If an important one is missed, you will need to manually copy it to your records from the site. Then going forward, make sure to keep a copy of each new article you post.

KEEP COPIES OF YOUR ARTICLES! Make sure to do this today to protect your writing. Log in HERE.
We can learn and improve our own writing by reading the winners.
While you are there, sow some good seed by leaving a comment.

Noel Mitaxa is an Aussie storyteller. He has syndicated his weekly Good News column in Australian secular newspapers for over twenty years; a syndication that's recently expanded into Australia's armed services and to the USA and the UK.

His insights come from decades of working with people: as an employment counsellor; then as a pastor and a chaplain in industry and sports; and from living up close as a husband, father and grandfather.

Noel loves words: as powerful tools and as playful toys. He has edited a Christian sports magazine, promotional brochures, television testimony spots, children's books and pastoral care books. Most recently he assisted Christian coaches with a soccer manual that links discipleship pointers with game strategies-as a bridge to reaching young sportspeople in the developing world.

Having loved the stimulation of belonging to the FaithWriters family since early 2009, Noel is keen to assist colleagues wanting to reach secular readers with credibility and relevance.

Another Great Way to Improve The Critique Circle

Fellow Members Need Your Help.

Providing comments and critiques for fellow members is of great encouragement to them. It is also the perfect way to improve your writing skill.

Tips on Giving Critiques

Critiquing the work of others requires balance. Being too nice will not help your fellow writers develop their work; being too harsh can crush a writer’s ego (particularly new writers, who tend to be shy about sharing their work). How can you achieve the right balance? Here are some tips:

Take care to point out both what works, and what doesn’t. If you’re new to critiquing, a good hint would be to point out one thing you like (a phrase, a description, an idea) for each thing that bothered you.

Whenever possible, be specific when pointing out things that you didn’t like (don’t just say “I didn’t like this part” or “I’d cut that,” say “I didn’t like this part because…” or “I’d cut that because…”).

Try to offer suggestions when you think a change is needed. Suggestions, even to the point of an offered rewording, can be very helpful; even if the suggestion isn’t exactly right for the author to use, he or she may get a good idea from it, or at least a better understanding of the point you are trying to make.

Be honest and direct, but in a polite and caring way. Holding back your feelings about a piece because you’re afraid to share your thoughts isn’t going to help anyone. Just be mindful of how you share your opinions!

We Also Need Your Article to Critique!
Members and paid editors provide the critiques in the circle. You can even submit your judged Challenge entries to the circle.

"I have a few, very few, trusted friends who will edit me with a scowl. Most people want you to feel good so they give you compliments about your writing, and these don’t help at all (except emotionally). Really, you need some grouches to edit your work." Philip Yancey in a FaithWriters interview.

This is a real chance to help others and receive some very constructive and private critiques of your writing.

We Always Respond to Emails

If you do not receive a timely response to an email, we did not receive your email, or you did not receive our reply. We are constantly battling overwhelming amounts of spam and sometimes emails we should receive end up in our spam by accident.

You should check your spam and make sure that writer-support@faithwriters.com, feedback@faithwriters.com, bea@faithwriters.com and michael@faithwriters.com are on your email providers approved list.

If you have tried more than once and did not receive a reply, click on a contact link at the bottom of most FaithWriters pages and send us a message telling us of the issue. We will try and email you from another email provider.
Article Comment Emails Not Getting to Your Gmail?

In the past, some members have had issues receiving notification emails when their Challenge or other articles receive a comment. We just did a test of the system and placed a Gmail test address in my profile. I then posted a comment on one of my articles. I also did this test on a Challenge article for a member who said she was not getting the emails. In both tests, the email notification of the comment did come through to the Gmail address, but in both cases, it went to the junk file in Gmail. So, FaithWriters automatic email system is working to Gmail but may be going to your junk.

If you have not been receiving notifications of comments on your articles, post a test comment on one of your own articles and then check the junk tab on your Gmail. Be aware, my junk tab in Gmail showed there were no junk emails until I clicked on it and found the comment notification email from FaithWriters in there.  If you find any emails from FaithWriters in your junk, move them to your inbox and hopefully next time they will not go to junk. Make sure to check your junk on a regular basis and click on the other tabs just to check. Each time move them to your inbox. There is also a tab titled "view all email" that should be checked. Sometimes Gmail divides email up into different tabs, so check all the tabs once in a while just in case. This is something you should check if you have Hotmail or others too.
