What was once the site of Fox’s U-Bet Chocolate Syrup Factory in Brownsville, Brooklyn is now home to two towers with 174 units of supportive and affordable housing above ground-floor light manufacturing space. The two towers, which also include amenity spaces on the second floor, surround an 11,000 square foot green area. The community room, laundry room, computer lab, and multipurpose room all open onto the outdoor space, which was intentionally designed to promote community living and socialization.

The Bridge will provide supportive services to 87 individuals with histories of homelessness, including people living with serious mental illness, seniors and veterans. The remaining 86 units will be filled through the city’s Housing Connect lottery by low-income families and singles. The first 22 supportive housing residents moved into Bridge Rockaway at the beginning of October.

The Bridge worked closely with Greenpoint Manufacturing and Design Center (GMDC) to execute the vision behind this project. GMDC’s 39,000 square foot light manufacturing space will be utilized by woodworkers, furniture makers, garment makers, and more. It is expected to create up to 35 new jobs in the Brownsville community.

“When The Bridge conceived this project, our goal was to create much needed supportive and affordable housing while preserving manufacturing uses. This first of its kind project proves a concept that can be replicated across the city,” said Bridge CEO, Susan Wiviott. “I am deeply grateful to our entire development team, particularly Mega Development, Think! Architecture and Design, and GMDC for seeing this project through to completion.”
