Subject: Friend, it's time for Great Books Week, TOS birthday bash, & a funny resource

Good morning, Friend, Excellence in Literature: Reading and Writing Through the Classics

I just wanted to share a couple of interesting things with you, now that school is underway. I can hardly believe it's almost October!

Great Books Week 2011 posterThe first thing I wanted to share is Great Books Week 2011, coming up in just a few days. It's an annual event, sponsored by Excellence in Literature, that runs during the first week in October (the 2nd-8th).

This year is special because we're celebrating the 150th anniversary of the publication of Charles Dickens' Great Expectations. Each day, we'll post a new quote or Dickens-related resource, and we encourage all of you to visit the www.GreatBooksWeek.com blog to enjoy it all with us, and to participate by sharing memories or answering questions.

The second thing I thought you might want to know is that The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a Birthday Bash. You won't want to miss the excitement and the FREEBIES;-).

Here are a few things they have for you to do:

  • Visit TOS's new blog (Homeschooling with Heart http://blog.thehomeschoolmagazine.com/birthday-bash/) and learn about three exciting Birthday Bash events featuring freebies, daily door prizes, a meet-and greet webinar with TOS's new columnists, and loads of fun for everyone!
  • Read all about TOS's new interactive digital magazine with more than double the content: http://thehomeschoolmagazine.com/BirthdayBash/. Discover the amazing features the magazine will have in January as TOS moves from a quarterly to a monthly publication.
  • Get with the big TOS FREEBIE: The Curiosity Files® 9-Pack E-Book Bundle. These fascinating science units help children discover some unusually interesting subjects . . . you know, the unfamiliar, zany, and strange things of nature that kids are so attracted to. Everyone who goes to this link will receive the complete set FREE: 9 complete unit studies http://blog.thehomeschoolmagazine.com/?page_id=355
Finally, I wanted to share a funny resource for the scientists among us. A representative of Orkin Pest Control contacted me to let me know they'd posted an educational page with a virtual cockroach(!). They felt homeschoolers would be interested, so they asked if I'd pass along a link to the Orkin Virtual Roach. It's very nicely done, with special roll-over effects. Enjoy!

I hope you're having a wonderful autumn, and I wish you joy in the learning journey. Remember to visit the Great Books Week blog each day next week to see what's up. I'll write again next month with

Blessings,
