"To waken interest and kindle enthusiasm is the sure way to teach easily and successfully."
Tryon Edwards

Dear Friend,

Cooler weather is arriving! Don't forget to enjoy a few days of outdoor schooling with nature notebooks, ball games, and other kinds of fun. Learning happens in many ways, and deskwork isn't always the best thing. I've already spent a couple of days outside on the patio with my books, computer, and pens, and it was well worth lugging everything back and forth-- creation can be soothing and meditative, even if there are leaves that ought to be raked;-).

In this week's newsletter, there's an eclectic selection of things to think about. I've posted a page from our family photo album in a 9-11 remembrance on the blog, shared an older article on writing, plus a few details about our new Excellence in Literature site where we're uploading context resources so they'll be easier to find. There's also an invitation to submit an article to next week's Carnival of Homeschooling, which I'll be hosting at the Taking Time for Things that Matter blog at Janice-Campbell.com.

It's a busy time of year, and I hope these resources help you as you teach your family. Enjoy!

Blessings,

Janice Campbell
From the Archives
As I get ready to work with students in the upcoming Beat-the-Clock Essay Workshop, I found an article from the archives that I thought might be helpful for the school year: Our Students Need to Write More

"During the past decade I've spent a fair amount of time evaluating student writing and teaching SAT prep essay workshops and online high school literature classes. I've had the chance to read hundreds of papers from workshops and online high school literature classes. I've had the chance to read hundreds of papers from students all over the country, and I've discovered one small key to success in writing... read more

Beat-the-Clock Essay Workshop

"This is one of the most rewarding and fun workshops I do. Students often come in feeling uncertain of what is required for the SAT essay and unable to write quick essays, but they almost always leave with a feeling of genuine accomplishment. We write two timed essays during the day, and the students take home a little handbook that will help them
continue to practice. It’s a lot of fun, and I hope to see you there!

Excellence in Literature Website
We've been working busily to move Excellence in Literature Context Resources to our new EIL website, and I'm happy to announce that we've gotten a lot up already. We're bringing in public domain information and requesting permission to reprint many other valuable articles from college professors and scholars.

EIL Resource LInks
If you're working with Excellence in Literature and you find a link that isn't working, visit www.Excellence-in-Literature.com to see if it's posted there. If it's not, you can often find it by Google-searching. We will continue to find and host as much as possible so that you can have a single safe place to browse for context resources. If you find anything you think we ought to include, please send us a link. We want to make EIL better every year!

Teachers and Co-op Leaders Using EIL
We are thinking of adding something to the new EIL site that will allow you to communicate with one another and share plans. Is anyone interested? Every time I talk to someone who is using the curriculum with a group, I'm impressed by the creative ways they have found to teach it, and I think that would be amazing to share. Remember, I am available for teacher training days (just had a wonderful time at Northside Christian Academy, working with the language and literature teachers who will be teaching Excellence in Literature this year). Just e-mail me if you need to schedule something.

If you've written a book and want to publish it for Kindle, the National Association of Independent Writers and Editors (NAIWE) is offering a teleclass for members with Kindle Expert Brian Schwartz. He'll discuss the process of turning your book into a well-formatted Kindle book, and how to market it so that it sells.

Carnival of Homeschooling
I'll be hosting the Carnival of Homeschooling on the Taking Time for Things that Matter blog on Tuesday of next week. If you would like to submit a post, please submit it at the Blog Carnival site by Monday evening, 17 September 2012.

I'm offering brief monthly Classics-Based Writing lessons for the coming school year, and there are many other great classes available there. If you're looking for something special to supplement your curriculum, I think you'll enjoy seeing what's available on SchoolhouseTeachers.com.
Free e-book: You can download a free e-book from the University of Chicago Press. We thought you'd like to know about the September free e-book selection, Madison’s Nightmare: How Executive Power Threatens American Democracy by Peter M. Shane.

A thirty-year bipartisan trend in the American presidency is the expansion of executive power. Peter Shane shows how presidents exert ever more control over nearly every arena of policy, from military affairs and national security to domestic programs. This “aggressive presidency” subverts the founders’ vision of representative government. Get your free e-book edition of Madison’s Nightmare during the month of September.
