Who does not thank for little will not thank for much. --Estonian Proverb

Dear Friend,

I hope you are enjoying a sweet holiday season with your family. As I do each year, I'd like to share
 my favorite Thanksgiving poem and the famous Cranberry-Orange relish recipe.

This year, we're thinking about those whose lives have been impacted by Hurricane Sandy. There is so much clean-up to be done, and it's so cold in those states. One of our friends will be taking a truckload of relief supplies to the small town of Sea Bright, New Jersey next week, and will be gathering things through 12/2. If you live near Central Virginia and can spare a roll of duct tape, a can of coffee, or anything else on the list (on the event page at Facebook), I know it would be appreciated.

If you're farther away, it would help if you'd be willing to like and share the event page for the relief effort. We'd love to see the truck completely full, and I know that those who will be receiving the supplies would appreciate the interest and support. (In this case, clicking that "I'm coming" doesn't mean that you will help deliver supplies, just that you support the effort.) https://www.facebook.com/events/442131752513914/

Finally, I have exciting news about the George Herbert book I've long recommended in the second and fourth levels of EIL. You can read about it on the Excellence in Literature site: http://excellence-in-literature.com/bookstore/working-it-out-learning-and-growing-with-george-herbert-by-joseph-l-womack.

May you have a blessed and joyous Thanksgiving.

Blessings,

Janice Campbell

P.S. We are looking forward to welcoming a new grandbaby in the next couple of weeks, and we'd be grateful for prayers for the safe arrival of this new life.
Gratefulnesse”- A Poem of Thanksgiving

GRATEFULNESSE

by George Herbert (1593- 1633)

Thou that hast given so much to me,
Give one thing more, a grateful heart.
See how thy beggar works on thee
By art.

He makes thy gifts occasion more,
And says, If he in this be crossed,
All thou hast given him heretofore
Is lost.

But thou didst reckon, when at first
Thy word our hearts and hands did crave,
What it would come to at the worst
To save.

Perpetual knockings at thy door,
Tears sullying thy transparent rooms,
Gift upon gift, much would have more,
And comes.

This not withstanding, thou wenst on,
And didst allow us all our noise:
Nay thou hast made a sigh and groan
Thy joys.

Not that thou hast not still above
Much better tunes, than groans can make;
But that these country-airs thy love
Did take.

Wherefore I cry, and cry again;
And in no quiet canst thou be,
Till I a thankful heart obtain
Of thee:

Not thankful, when it pleaseth me;
As if thy blessings had spare days:
But such a heart, whose pulse may be
Thy praise.
Our Favorite Thanksgiving Recipe

Fresh Cranberry-Orange Relish

2 bags fresh cranberries (frozen is okay)
3 juicy Valencia oranges, unpeeled, cut in eighths
2-3 handfuls of shelled walnuts
Sugar to taste

Chop or grind the cranberries and orange pieces in a food processor or old-fashioned crank-type food grinder. Chop the walnuts with a knife (definitely not the food processor– trust me on this) and add to the fruit. Add about a cup of sugar to start, stir, and keep adding sugar until it’s perfect.

It’s good when made the day before, as the flavors blend nicely. If you do this, you’ll need to keep it out of sight, or you may have a problem with poachers. Whatever you call it, it’s been a family favorite ever since I can remember pouring berries through the grinder when I was a little girl. Yum!

Exciting news! 12 copies available:
Working It Out: Growing Spiritually with the Poetry of George Herbert

   C.S. Lewis enjoyed the poetry of George Herbert, but many people have never heard of him. Working it Out: Growing Spiritually with the Poetry of George Herbert is a delightful introduction to this Christian poet.

I recommend it both for learning and for pleasure. It's also recommended in the second and fourth levels of the Excellence in Literature curriculum.

The book has been out of print (for sale on Amazon at $74.90), but I have received the author's permission to reprint, and he even sent me the last 12 available copies from the first printing.

I'm offering them this week at $10 plus postage, and you can learn more and get a copy at:
