| Dear Friend, I hope you had a joyous Thanksgiving. As always, we enjoyed being with family and friends. Our focus is now on the little grandson that is expected at any time (today is his due date, but you know how babies are). We're praying for his safe arrival.
I'll be keeping my sweet granddaughter, Imogen Violet, while mommy and daddy are away, so if you e-mail me in the next few days, just know that my response may be a bit slower than usual (you know how absorbing two-year-olds are!). And please--feel free to e-mail again if you feel I missed your inital note. My inbox fills very fast, and things sometimes get sent to the wrong folder, so a second e-mail is always helpful if you don't hear back soon.
Planning and gift-giving seem appropriate topics for this time of year, so we chose these two articles from the archives to offer a bit of encouragement for you. I hope you enjoy them! This will probably be the last newsletter until the end of the month, because I know you'll probably be focused on family and celebration, and that's a very good thing.
I wish you joy!
Blessings,
Janice Campbell
P.S. If you're preparing for the holidays, I thought you'd like to know that for a bit extra, we'll gift-wrap your purchase and ship it to the recipient of your choice. So if you know someone who'd just love to get a homeschooling book or two for Christmas (probalby NOT your student!), be sure to browse Everyday-Education.com. You'll find the "gift wrap" option linked from the Catalog page. |
| | Are you thinking about gifts and giving this morning? Perhaps even about receiving a gift or two? Whichever one it is, I’m sure you have lots of company. The thing I’ve found about gifting is that the older I get, the more relaxed I am about it, and as a result, the whole process becomes simpler. If gift-giving occasions make you feel stressed or depressed, perhaps our gifting story will help. Read more...

Resource Focus for December
|
|
- Need to know how to create a topic outline for an essay? - Wondering whether to put punctuation inside or outside the quotation marks?
- Looking for a handy guide to written arguments, paragraph structure, and basic mechanics?
The Excellence in Literature Handbook for Writers
may be the reference book you need. There are two parts to the writer's
handbook, the first on essays and the second on style and usage. Together they can answer many of the questions your student will face in
high school and college English classes.
Don't forget-- we offer gift wrapping if you'd like to have it shipped to a special someone! |

Don't forget that I'm offering supplementary classics-based writing lessons in the Schoolhouse Academy!
Each month we study a poem or short piece of prose using a four step process in which students Absorb, Analyze, Transform, and Create in relation to the work studied. This doesn't replace your primary writing curriculum, but it's extra practice in an interesting, effective, and engaging format.

| | | Rifll Publishing's Kid's Writing Challenge
Give your kids an exciting, self-esteem building, motivating, FUN experience: help them enter the Kid's Writing Challenge.
Entry is FREE, and open to all English-speaking kids ages 5 to 13. Deadline is 12-31-12.
There will be NO losers, as all entries will receive either 2nd place (and publication online), or 1st place (and publication in a paperback anthology).
You don't have to believe your child is a gifted writer, and you don't have to invest a lot of time in this. Just submit something your child has already written, or ask him/her to whip something up---Rifll even encourages each child to submit multiple items. Any style, and subject (as long as it's rated G). Stories, poems, essays, or anything done with words.
What does your child think is fun, interesting, or important? Let them put in their own words, and see it published for all the world to see. They'll be able to send links to family and friends (or maybe even show off their words in a real book). They'll also enjoy reading what other kids write.
The more entries, the more fun; so please tell all your friends (online and off), so they can participate too!
Entry is simple. See details at http://www.rifll.com/challenge.htm Remember, the deadline is 12-31-12. |

| America's Next Author Contest If you like vote-based contest shows such as American Idol or Britain's Got Talent, you may enjoy this similarly formatted writing contest. This is a resource I have not thoroughly explored, so parents, please do so before sharing this with your students.
Described as 'the first real social writing contest, where the winners will be chosen based on a unique combination of votes from readers and judging by industry experts," this contest provides the opportunity for participants to submit a story, then progress through several rounds, based on votes received. |

If you're using the curriculum, you'll find that we've hosted many of the context resources on the site, organized by level so you can easily find them. Even if you're not using EIL, you'll find good resources for literature and history study, including source documents, poetry, and more. I hope the new site makes using EIL even simpler!
If you work with words, or want to, you need to get "The Edge: Success Strategies for People Who Work With Words," a free newsletter from the National Association of Independent Writers and Editors at www.NAIWE.com.
