Don't miss the Mighty Mug giveaway at DoingWhatMatters!

Dear Friend,

We've reached the first day of autumn, and I'm thankful for cooler weather. What special outdoor projects are you planning to do? I'm hoping to make a leaf book this fall — just collecting leaves as they turn and preserving them in a small booklet. It's a fun way to get acquainted with one little corner of the world, and for students keeping a nature notebook, it can be an extension of that activity or just a diversion. I plan to post a photo and directions when I'm finished, in case you'd like to try it.

Tips for Overwhelm
Before I forget, my friend Sarah Mackenzie is offering an article called Hope for the Overwhelmed Homeschooler. It contains six pages of short, helpful tips from experienced homeschoolers, including me. I think you'll find it encouraging. I especially liked the tip from Leila Lawler — it's guaranteed to help you relax!

Lunar Eclipse
Did you know there's going to be full lunar eclipse Sunday night? Not only that, it will be a very special harvest moon. It's a wonderful opportunity to bundle up outdoors and watch the moon disappear and reappear. Read more about the eclipse . . .

More articles and the giveaway
I've been working on the websites, adding articles and links to Everyday Education and Doing What Matters. In addition to the articles linked below, there are articles on how to study for college level exams and college alternatives, as well as an Ideas Worth Sharing Post with a look at The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, a booklist for young men, a look at 32 maps that will teach you new things, and a review of the untippable Mighty Mug with a giveaway that ends Wednesday. And don't forget The Nerd's Guide to Learning Everything Online!

I wish you a joyful month!

Warmly,

Janice Campbell

Have you looked at the Excellence in Literature curriculum for grades 8-12? These study guides help you teach classic literature to your high school students, even if you don't know Virginia Woolf from Beowulf.

EIL is based on online English classes I taught for several years, and it presents great literature in its literary, historical, artistic, and cultural context. Week by week lesson plans make it easy to use, and there is a whole website full of context resources to make study easier.

I've posted widgets for the recommended editions of the focus texts for EIL, and hope to very soon have a page up with widgets for the honors texts.

Have you "liked" the Excellence in Literature page on Facebook yet? We'd love to connect with you there!

*Links or Amazon resources marked with an asterisk are affiliate links (that means that if you purchase the item from the link, I would get a small referral commission; nothing happens if you don't purchase anything). Most of these items are things I have read and used and loved, and have shared many times without affiliate links, and you can be sure that I would never recommend anything I didn't believe to be beneficial.

If you haven't yet seen the Excellence in Literature resource website, I think you'll enjoy it. If you're using the curriculum, you'll find that we've hosted many of the context resources on the site, organized by level so you can easily find them. Even if you're not using EIL, you'll find good resources for literature and history study, including source documents, poetry, and more. I hope the new site makes using EIL even simpler!
