Subject: Day 5

Hi Friend,

We did use relatively small stakes in respect to our bank. I did think it could be an odd day and it was. Two or three big upsets all at once.

Spain absolutely dominated Sweden with 75% of the ball, all the chances and failed to take a number of them. Sweden did have the odd one here or there but the fact that Spain failed to get one is just crazy for those who watched.

The Poland v Slovakia game was influenced by the red card. 0-1 early. Poland then scored seconds after half time which is a great time to make it 1-1 and just as the game was heading into the business end, Poland get a red card and Slovakia end up beating them.

Scotland were unfortunately poor. A game that they won a year ago, at home - today just wasn't good for them. The second goal by Schick was absolutely amazing. 50 yard strike!

I did say that in the first round, we bet fairly small across all the teams just to get a feel of things. I will do a full round up on these teams and what I saw and what we will bet on going forward at the end of the first round - the end of the first round is actually at the end of DAY 5 so I'll do a full review and get it out by Wednesday afternoon.

HUNGARY v PORTUGAL ANALYSIS

Hungary come into this game in good form, but a lot of that good form has been against very sub par opponents. Portugal have got a wealth of talent. A few years ago when they won this competition, you could say they had a lesser team than they do now. They even failed to win a single group game, still qualified and ended up scraping through to the final and winning it in ET. I think that has put a bit of pressure on them for this tournament.

That being said, they are still a top side and you expect them to get the job done against Hungary. They are one of the top 3 or 4 in form national sides in over the last two years in Europe and of course, they have Ronaldo at age 36. Even at 36, he will be central to everything.

They also have top players around him and far more depth than they had a few years ago. I think the scoreline will be tight but that Portugal will get the job done.

Another factor that does go against Portugal in theory, is the way factor. However, this actually works better with their counter attacking style of play.

FRANCE V GERMANY ANALYSIS

I spoke about the indifferent form of Germany leading up to the tournament but it is dangerous to rule them out - they do, more often than not, get it together in big tournaments. France are the favourites for the tournament and you can't argue it. They have such a good side with a lot of depth. They are the most recent World Cup winners and have a wealth of talent.

There have been one or two rumours of disharmony in the papers - if this is correct then it will be of concern and we will learn a lot about them for the 2nd round of matches.

I have gone for both to score - this feels like France should win it 2-1 or thereabouts. I can't picture Germany winning this - they are a bit youthful in certain areas compared to what they once were. The French side on the other hand will be stacked with talent in virtually every position.
