Dear Friend,
I listen to about 20 podcasts a week. I have my favorites that reflect my various interests that include ham radio, Linux, music, and entrepreneurship. I want to share with you two outstanding podcast episodes from this week that were both exceptional.
Episode 325 of Linux in the Hamshack had an especially interesting guest, Josh Nash, KI6NAZ, who spoke about the relevance of ham radio to the new generations of young people to replace us old timers, eventually. Josh's younger viewpoint makes it clear that as old timers, we may not even be speaking the same language as the current tech-savvy teenagers. Because of new social conventions, spending time with the "Elmer" on the street is not an option, and that better use of videos and social media may be more effective. Even the word "Elmer", instead of mentor, may have a negative association with amateur radio. It was clear that we need to change the way that we relate to younger people if we want them to join us in ham radio.
I also listened to the latest installment of The Ham Radio Workbench podcast, "Solar Power with Genesun". If you want to know everything about solar power and charge controllers, George and Jeremy's guest, Ryan Gurin, from Genasun, was an amazing fount of knowledge on everything solar electric. I was blown away by this interview and his practical knowledge.
My QSO with Mike Ritz, W7VO, fits right into the spirit of mentoring, expertise, and leadership. Mike is the ARRL Northwest Division Director, and a new board member of the ARRL Foundation. Mike puts his money where his mouth is by training new and local hams in his contest station. Mike leads by example.
Thanks for listening.
