Subject: QSO Today: From Denny's Digicomm Cafe

QSO Today Message
Dear Friend,

I just got my October edition of QRP Quarterly and want to direct you to this really fine amateur radio magazine as well as to the article by David Cripe, NM0S, my guest in Episode 77, who authored "Reinartz and the Radio Boy" about the rise of Arthur Collins and the Collins Radio Company in the framework of Admiral Richard Byrd's exploration of the North Pole.  Great historical reading about amateur radio.  Good work David!

I am now back in the saddle in Israel, running my business, catching up on projects, and finding guests for the QSO Today Podcast.  It was in this context that an invitation from Denny Johnson, K5DCC, to join him in his Digicomm Cafe, his daily amateur radio interview podcast.  Denny is just a nice guy; how could I say no?  Denny was kind enough to allow me to  use the audio for this weeks podcast to share with you.  With the skill of Ben Bresky, my talented audio engineer, the audio should be close to perfect and Denny and I sound brilliant.

We are off the usual QSO Today rails in this episode.  We started with Denny asking me questions.  I am not a very good guest, so I started asking Denny questions.  I like to learn lots about ham radio and was fascinated when he discussed his local use of mesh networking.  Pay attention to this, as you might find it interesting, especially if you live in a rural area with your neighbors.  Funny, it was Ben Bresky who asked me, after editing the podcast on Friday, about this mesh network and a possible application that we might have here for it, outside of amateur radio. Of course, I used that opportunity to pitch Ben to get his own amateur radio license.

While it is not the usual QSO Today conversation, Denny and I touch on faith and politics briefly as these are aspects of our lives that define us both. As I found out, this may be a more common conversation in Denny's Digicomm Cafe.  Both Denny and I agree that amateurs come from all walks of life and from different religious and political persuasions.  We share a passion for our amazing hobby that allow us to bridge the gap leading to polite and interesting conversation.

Thanks for listening.

73, Eric 4Z1UG
