Can I keep it 1000000% with you? Indie HIP HOP has to improve when it comes to business—not just the money-making part, but the etiquette as well. Too many of us are afraid of contracts, percentages, and dealings, especially within my community (POC). I can't count how many times I've faced threats due to online business dealings stemming from a lack of understanding. It's amusing, but it's time for us to handle business professionally.
The moment you decide to invest in yourself and exchange money for a service, you're crossing into the realm of a PROFESSION. We, as a community, need to start acting like professionals so that the WORLD MARKET takes us seriously. Many of us are incredibly talented but lack the emotional balance required for business. This is a significant reason why the success rate is only 1%.
Now, what am I (Epik) going to do about it?
I acknowledge that I've been distant in my dealings with you as an artist. Since 2016, I've been in the shadows of the music world, observing and waiting for the right time to make my move. That time is 2024.
Throughout the pandemic, I've witnessed producers mistreat artists and distributors taking from you without your knowledge. I now see Spotify taking money right from under your nose. The time to act is now. With 18 years of professional experience in this industry, I understand you to the core—your hesitance due to a lack of support and belief, whether from others or yourself. I comprehend the emotions behind it and how you're not allowed to show weakness due to bravado. I get it.
In the near future, I will be connecting with artists, building a community to bridge the gap not only between YOU AND I but also between the producer community and the artist community. Look out for an email next week. Until then, keep grinding, my friend.
Best regards,
Epik
