The African Philosophy of Ubuntu:

“I Am Because We Are”

Dear Friend,

Consider the African philosophy of “Ubuntu” — a concept in which your sense of self is shaped by your relationships with other people. A rough translation of Ubuntu’s principle is “humanity to others.” Another translation might be: “faith in a universal sharing bond that links all humanity.” It’s a way of living that begins with the premise that “I am” only because “we are.”

Women in the village of Kambiri, Kenya sift sand as part of the brick making process.

Friendly Water facilitates the concept of Ubuntu through our work, linking individuals from the United States with those in Africa in a sharing bond. Washington state resident, Diana Hanson, recently embraced this concept with her gift of $10,000 to Friendly Water for our work in the villages of Kenya. Diana knows firsthand how urgent the need for water security, better building, sustainable food, and improved sanitation are around the world. Her mission trips with the United Methodist Church took her to Nicaragua, Haiti, India, Guatemala, Belize, and several Caribbean countries. “Everywhere we went,” Diana said, “it was obvious that water is key. People simply can’t live without it.”

Meanwhile in Kambiri, Kenya, Monica Masitsa shared her story of the impact of our work. “After my husband died, I had to go extra ways to make sure my children are schooling, dressing, and eating like any other children. I have worked for people on their farms and all types of work that were paying something small to sustain myself. When I joined Kambiri Community Development Group, I didn’t know I would get a lot of privileges as I am getting now. Like now I am the happiest woman who has experience in brick making and am an assistant mason. When visitors came in from the United States, I was called upon to come and showcase my experience in brick making. This really made me feel honored and humbled before everyone. Thank you, Friendly Water, for coming into my community to make me grow as I have. My children are in school and living a good life.”

On opposite sides of the world, Diana and Monica now share a bond, united in their humanity. Will you join us in this bond through your support?  Together, we can make a difference in our own lives, as well as in the lives of our global family. "I Am Because We Are."

Warmest regards,
