when we all work together-we succeed!

June 2022 Issue

Greetings Friend,

Thank you for opening our June newsletter. A big reason we publish this every month is that it's important, in these times, that people like you and us get to read about something positive, something good and something we can all be a part of.

Another reason, is that's it's important to talk about work that, if not easy, is at least doable, affects numerous lives for the better and is simple to describe with words we all know, even if we don't hear them enough. Words like hope, partnership, solutions, accomplishment, opportunities, empowerment and, most of all, success.

This month we visit with Kambiri Community Development Group (KCDG) leadership, this group, started by Friendly Water and the Kambiri community in January of 2022 is making a big impact within their community- and beyond.

We'll introduce a Lead ISSB Technician and go over our Rainwater Catchment Tank (RCT) construction schedule for the next few months.

And we'll see how our soap makes health impacts while creating jobs, bringing home wages and lending a community hand to our neighbors, even ones that are 250 miles away.

As always, we wish you peace and joy in all that you do.

In Brief- What happened in May

A local agribusiness entrepreneur with a 5 liter container of our "Safi" multipurpose liquid soap

>> The Matsakha Youth Development Group (MYDG) stocked the shelves with 617 liters of "Meta" Liquid Soap and sold 593 liters, producing 50,210 Kenyan Shillings ($427) in revenue - a 62% jump from last month's drop-off which was attributable to inflation fears and gas scarcity.

>> The Kambiri Community Development Group produced an inventory of 508 liters of "Safi" Liquid Soap and sold 474 liters for sales of 53,050 Ksh ($424). This is a 170% increase from April.

>> Friendly Water for the World was part of an excellent write-up in the May issue of the Global WA newsletter. It really speaks to the need of having multiple groups working on individual solutions for common challenges. We're proud to be a part of the answer.

>> Having produced 20,000 ISSB bricks in our two locations, we spent two days bringing them out to their respective build sites to begin RCT construction.

Meet Mrs. Tabitha Musonye,

Chair, Kambiri Community Development Group

"My name is Tabitha Musonye, I am the Chairperson of Kambiri Community Development Group, we are only five months old in operation and making great strides. While we were participating in the three Community engagement process, I was doing so not knowing that the mantle of leading this community in overseeing Friendly Water technologies implemented in Kambiri. I am equally excited because this was a great opportunity for me to practice my leadership more so as a lady amongst men. The success and challenges comes to me on equal measure and I go through them. This experience helps me even on my other endeavors."

(ed. in addition to being KCDG's first Chair, Mrs Tabitha Musonye is a mother of four children, one girl and three boys, with a strong passion of serving the community. She is also a small scale farmer, her hobby is singing.)

Introducing Simon Brown Matolo,

Lead ISSB Production Technician for MYDG

"My name is Simon Brown Matolo I am a worker with Matsakha Youth Development Group and in charge of the department of brick production, it has now been over two years since I started my involvement with the group, I was among the first cohort to be trained on brick production by a team from Kambiri. Since then, my experience, expertise and passion has continuously increased as I continued interacting with the press machine. I have taken this venture to be an employment for me and that’s why

I usually take extra care of the machine because this is where I earn and get my daily bread. I am equally grateful for Matsakha group and Friendly Water for the World for introducing this community to Friendly technologies which have been a total turn around for my life. This has been a game changer to my life."

Greetings from-

Timbito and Mackuchi Primary Schools

An Assistant Mason from MYDG bringing ISSB bricks to the build site

We have started work on four more Rainwater Catchment Tanks (RCT) in the Matsakha area. When completed this will bring to 16 the number of RCT built at Matsakha schools with an additional 24 scheduled for completion this year.

Principals, teachers, school cooks and students have already told us what an impact these tanks have on their educational efforts: no more pulling children out of class to source water, no interruptions to the lessons, teachers teaching, students learning, cooks cooking. All made possible by Water Security.

Here are some photos of the first two days, helpers and all:

Look at how many students are carrying water containers, they won't need to do this anymore!

High Quality Multipurpose Liquid Soap production contributing to health, social and economic benefits for local communities.

Our partners, Matsakha Youth Development Group (MYDG) and Kambiri Community Development Group (KCDG), each have their own brand, "Meta" and "Safi" respectively, of our formulation for multipurpose liquid soap. Same ingredients, different scent and color, but the same high quality soap that's been approved for sale by the Kenya Bureau of Standards.

200 litres of Safi Soap made by KCDG on the way to Shanderema High School

A journey of one thousand miles starts with a single step. When we trained our teams in Matsakha and Kambiri Communities on liquid soap production and sales, our minds were limited to a market scope within the community.

And then Boom…..an order comes in to supply Eighty Litres (80) of the liquid soap to the Northern town of Kenya-Lodwar (400 km away). This is an arid region that experiences dry spells for the better part of the year. Through a friend who runs and manages an orphanage in Lodwar we had a request for supply of this unexpected offer. In order to make this delivery, there is a hurdle of how to get the soap to another far away town-Kitale that has courier services to Lodwar. The remedy to this hurdle came in form of the famously known “Boda Boda Riders”

Loading of liquid soap on a Boda Boda to Lodwar

Then came in another unexpected order from the Principal of a high school. Schools use soap in bulk for their cleaning services. Friends-Shanderema Boys High School ordered Two Hundred Litres (200) of the liquid soap with instructions…. “Make sure it is packaged in twenty litre (20) containers”. This instruction gave birth to our branded 20 Litre containers (top and middle photos).

The 20,000 Ksh sale to Shanderema H.S. is our largest wholesale order to date

Perhaps the best way to look at the social benefit of this work is to consider this: KCDG and their leadership realized that they had just had their most successful month ever with a net/ net income producing a significant profit. They also realized that one of the schools where RCTs had just been installed lacked a safe latrine. In fact, it was very dangerous. So, completely unsolicited by anyone else and with their profits in hand, KCDG bought cement for the school so they could finish the latrine, making life safer for students and teachers alike. NICE JOB!!

Your support is how this work gets done. Thank you!
