An Invitation to Pray AND Fast ... Inspired by Abraham Lincoln

Prayers for a Speedy and Compassionate End to Abortion and More ... Plus, an Answer to the Question, "What Would Abe Do"?

For years, some powerful forces have sought to erode the very foundation of America, inflicting godless values on a Godly nation.

Among the most tragic of these power grabs has been the Supreme Court's refusal to protect the right to life of unborn children. The fallout of this decision has exploited and endangered not only unborn children, but also countless other women, men and families at risk.

Abortion -- like other historic battles -- has deeply divided America. Still, after 40 years, those who fight valiantly to restore dignity, respect, the fundamental right to life, and other Godly values, have stayed the course and are growing stronger despite intense opposition.

What Would Abe Do?

This National Day of Prayer on Tues. May 2, 2013, is a good time to consider the words and actions of Civil War era President Abraham Lincoln. As president of a nation torn by civil war, he led the nation in ultimately abolishing slavery and reunifying America. He was among other great leaders in history who understood that the only real and enduring answer to conflict and the only true way to save our children, families and nation is turning and returning to God:

"My concern is not whether God is on our side, my greatest concern is to be on God's side, for God is always right." -- Abraham Lincoln

Lincoln's 1863 proclamation of a National Day of Prayer and Fasting noted that:

"... it is the duty of nations as well as of men, to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God, to confess their sins and transgressions, in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord."

The tradition of unified prayer traces back to the very beginning of our nation.

  • In 1775, the Continental Congress set aside a time for prayer in forming a new nation.

  • In 1863, President Lincoln appealed to war-weary nation not only to pray, but to fast. He proclaimed a National Day of Prayer and Fasting on March 30, 1863.

  • In 1952, President Truman signed the National Day of Prayer bill into law.

  • In 1988, President Reagan amended the law, designating the first Thursday of May as the annual National Day of Prayer.

  • May 2, 2013, is the 62nd annual National Day of Prayer.

Pray, Persevere and Consider Fasting, Too

As we rise to old and new challenges, striving to restore and preserve the right to life and other fundamental freedoms, please add the following prayers to your intentions. Given the gravity of the challenges we face, consider going the extra mile and fasting, as well.

The mustard-seed faith of citizens united in prayer has changed and can once again change the course of history.

Please share these prayers by sharing the "Prayers" page-link or downloadable pdf with prayer groups and church leaders, too.

  • for increased awareness among people of all faiths that most abortions are unwanted or coerced, and that many -- even in free nations -- are forced, sometimes violently

  • for unborn babies and mothers who have died from pregnancy-related violence and for those injured, hurt or killed in abortion's aftermath

  • that mothers still at risk or being coerced or forced into unwanted abortions will find the help they need in time

  • for mothers, fathers and families suffering from the loss of a child due to abortion, for those struggling with the pain and trauma that often surround this experience, and for those who experienced coercion, abuse, deception, violence and other injustices related to abortion

  • that families, friends and society will better understand unwanted, coerced or forced abortions, and that all of us will respond with genuine and practical compassion and support for those who are struggling with an unplanned or difficult pregnancy

  • for all mothers, fathers and families facing an unplanned or difficult pregnancy, especially those who are facing abortion and those who are being pushed, pressured, coerced or forced into abortion
