Editor's Note

As more information comes to light on the abusive, exploitative and dangerous practices rampant in the abortion industry, abortion advocates continue to claim that shutting down even "bad" abortion businesses will drive women to risky "back-alley" abortions. In this issue of the Elliot Institute News, we tackle the myths about back-alley abortions and why legalization has continued to harm, rather than help, women.

Next month is Abortion Recovery Awareness Month, sponsored by Abortion Recovery InterNational. Check out the announcement below. We have planned a special Church Awareness Project event for churches and faith communities to help respond to this need and to raise awareness that most abortions are unwanted or coerced, not "chosen." Find out more here.

Finally, if you haven't seen our "new," updated web site yet, be sure to stop by (it's still at www.afterabortion.org). All of the articles in this newsletter are posted online (see links below) and you can leave comments and discuss these issues on the web site. We look forward to your feedback!

The Truth About
"Back Alley" Abortions

Debunking Five Big Myths

With the arrest of Dr. Kermit Gossnell and his associates for running an abortion "house of horrors" in Philadelphia, and legislative proposals to strip Planned Parenthood of government funding at the state and federal levels, abortion advocates are falling back on the claim that any effort to regulate the abortion industry will lead to the closing of clinics and a rise in dangerous "back alley" abortions.

But these claims are based on myths. The truth is that legal abortion has increased, rather than prevented, the pain, suffering and exploitation of women.

Why Prior Abortions
Raise Autism Risk

Brent Rooney, M.Sc.

In 1999, Professor Larry Burd and colleagues reported that women with prior induced abortions had a three times higher risk of delivering a newborn later diagnosed with autism.1 In the 1960s, the U.S. autism rate for newborns was approximately 1 in 10,000, but the rate skyrocketed to 1 in 110 in 2009 according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Is it biologically plausible that prior maternal induced abortions elevate a newborn baby's autism risk? In a word, yes. This is because of two mechanisms -- preterm birth (very preterm and extremely preterm) and raised paternal age at delivery. Six significant studies report that prior induced abortions boost extremely preterm birth risk (under 28 weeks' gestation).

Announcements

April is Abortion Recovery Awareness Month

The Abortion Recovery InterNational Network (ARIN) cordially invites you to celebrate and participate in Abortion Recovery Awareness Month in April 2011.

The goals of Abortion Recovery Awareness Month are to encourage and  extend healing opportunities to those hurting after abortion, and to enlighten society about the effects of abortion on individuals and families.

During the month of April, ARIN affiliates and other advocates enlighten society by reaching out to others in their community through many different venues. An Abortion Recovery Awareness Calendar for the month of April is established each year providing ideas and resources.

Participants who are not ARIN affiliates are encouraged to sign the group's Principles of Participation. State governors and legislators can also sign a Statement of Proclamation promoting Abortion Recovery Awareness Month.

For more details, including resources and ideas for how to participate, visit www.abortionrecoveryawarenessmonth.org.
