Subject: How You Can Help Unwanted, Coerced and Unsafe Abortions

"Why would we want the standard of care for abortion to be less than that for other medical procedures?
Women deserve better."

-- Nebraska Sen. Cap Dierks, Floor Debate

April 19, 2010

Dear Friends,

Praise God! Thank the Lord! Soli Deo Gloria (Alone to God the Glory)!

The Elliot Institute's model bill, the Protection from Coerced and Unsafe Abortion Act, has been signed into law in Nebraska!

Countless thanks to Sen. Dierks, the bill sponsor. And double those countless thanks to Greg Schleppenbach of the Nebraska Catholic Conference, who tirelessly led the lobbying effort.

Finally, a very special thanks to you. Without the support of people like you over these last 22 years, we never would have had this success.

Without you, not a single woman in the entire country would have any hope of being able hold abortionists liable for psychological injuries after an abortion. Now, in Nebraska they can!

Now, because of you, it is truly possible to stop unwanted, unsafe abortions. Not only in Nebraska, but everywhere!

We have been advocating for states to pass this law for 22 years. Now, this first success will open countless doors, for two reasons.

First, legislators are always more willing to pass laws when they have already been enacted in another state. And what is happening in Nebraska will finally show them how loopholes in the law have been depriving women of the right to hold abortionists accountable for negligence.

Secondly, our bill has a unique provision that will protect the rights of women even if the law is attacked in the courts. If abortionists get an injunction against it, women who had abortions during the injunction will still be able to sue after the injunction is lifted, if the law is upheld. . . and it will be!

There is no way they can win a claim that there is a constitutional right to refuse to screen for coercion or provide proper screening for the psychological injuries associated with abortion.

This means abortionists can no longer ignore their obligation to do proper

pre-abortion screening. So, when this law goes into effect on July 15, Nebraska will be the first state in the country to see an end to assembly-line abortions and one-size fits all "counseling."

I can't tell you just how many coerced and unsafe abortions will be prevented. But with 64% of women being pressured into unwanted abortions today, I’m confident Nebraska will see a dramatic drop in abortion rates.

That's why this is so much bigger than Nebraska!  What is about to happen in Nebraska will catch the attention of legislators in other states . . . and even in other countries.

That's also why we need your help.

It's not enough to just be grateful for this success. Now is the time to redouble our efforts.

We need your help to replicate this success
in two more states in 2011, and in another four in 2012.

That won't be easy. Especially with our ongoing budget problems.

In our last fiscal year, we had an $18,335 shortfall. Despite cutting back on many important projects, our total expenses were just under $124,000, but our income was only $105,000.

Due to your generosity, we have cut the anticipated deficit to around $10,000 this year. But we can’t afford another deficit year.

The good news is that we still have until June 30 to end our fiscal year in the black.

Can you send a generous donation today?

We can close this budget gap with one gift of $5,000, two gifts of $1,000, four gifts of $500, ten gifts of $100, and twenty $50 gifts.

Am I asking for a celebration gift? Or an investment in protecting the rights of women and unborn children in other states? It's a little of both, perhaps.

But I am asking you to take a moment to pray about it.

If the Holy Spirit is nudging you to join us in this great work, please follow that nudge. You will have our deepest thanks.

Whether you can give or not, please keep us in your prayers. And please take three seconds to join me right now in praying: “Praise God! Thank the Lord! Soli Deo Gloria!

Yours for Life in Christ,

David C. Reardon, Ph.D..

Director

P.S. – For a donation of $100 or more, we'll send you a signed copy of my book Making Abortion Rare, which describes the education, outreach, and legislative plan that culminated in this great Nebraska victory. It will show you both how we got here and why this victory is so important.

I want you to have it.  Thank you!
